I've had some major bouts with depression in my life...becoming most acute in my mid teens. I've been fortunate enough to receive some excellent help when I needed it...from caring therapists and psychiatrists who found the best medication for me.

Get help if you need it. There is hope for us all.

When I first started working at a transport consulting firm in Reston, one of my older colleagues told me everyone with a drivers license thinks theyโ€™re a traffic engineer. Then he joked he was double my qualified because he had drivers licenses from two countries.

Great graphic showing cities on a triangle graph showing if they are most oriented to public transit, active mobility or cars.

Have you seen this? This recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips that are by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

Cycling Is Political (Whether We Admit It or Not) - Climate Ride People often say, โ€œCycling doesnโ€™t have to be political.โ€ Or, โ€œStick to watts, not politics.โ€But the truth is: cycling already is. Every time someone rides a bikeโ€”for transportation, for joy, for heal...

kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them

graph tracking democratic backsliding is occuring more quickly in the US than elsewhere.

New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

This graph from John Burn-Murdoch sums it up. ๐Ÿงต

Something important to understand about ICE thugs in the Twin Cities is that they're harassing innocent kids and parents at bus stops and schools every single day. Even after the Pretti shooting. It's terrorism.

Needless to say that Renee Good and Alex Pretti will go down as heroes here in Minnesota and nationally, their names synonymous with sacrifice and caring for vulnerable neighbors even at the risk of your own life. And hopefully no more innocent lives are lost.

Australia Day is such bullshit. NSW proclamation day at best. At worst a celebration of the crimes of colonisation.

If you have to acknowledge that the day is a source of pain for many, thatโ€™s a damn good sign itโ€™s a shit day to have as your national day.

โ€œOnly 25 of the worldโ€™s 300 largest cities have female mayors. A tiny 5% of municipal leadership positions are filled by women. Despite these figures, many of the cities that are making the most progress to become greener, cleaner, more equitable and liveable are led by women.โ€

a gentle reminder that wind power is bloody great, contributes bulk energy at a scale that was almost literally unimaginable in the energy discourse of the 2010s, and in conjunction with solar power, storage, transmission and aggressive demand reduction where possible, can eliminate fossil fuels ->

I was cycling and a man pulled his pickup right out in front of me. I swerved to avoid him. At the next traffic light, we got into a yelling match. I told him he should be more careful. He asked why defiantly. When I said, โ€œbecause you could kill meโ€, he completely changed and apologized profusely.

Solar met 61% of US electricity demand growth in 2025 | Ember

"Solar generation met a large proportion of US electricity demand growth in 2025, including in regions where demand rose most. It met all the rise in daytime electricity demand and, supported by batteries, also met much of the rise in evening electricity demand."

I donโ€™t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

After the assassination of Melissa Hortman itโ€™s not hard to understand why a woman in Minnesota would be afraid of a man in a mask who says heโ€™s a cop.

A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fellโ€”often by quite a bit.
