Little to Lose: Exit Options and Attitudes towards Automation in Chinese Manufacturing | The China Quarterly | Cambridge Core Little to Lose: Exit Options and Attitudes towards Automation in Chinese Manufacturing

🔓 @nicolewu.bsky.social and Zhongwei Sun's research uses qualitative and quantitative data to explore workers' responses and exit options in the face of increasing automation in manufacturing, finding greater anxiety amongst local workers than migrants. #机器换人.

Scatterplot showing various U.S. government agencies plotted with the total staff (on a log scale) on y-axis versus likelihood of being perceived as a knowledge institution on the x-axis. Red dots indicate agencies that have experienced DOGE layoffs, while gray dots indicate agencies without layoffs. Agencies like NIH, NSF, CDC, and NOAA appear on the right side (more likely to be perceived as knowledge institutions), while agencies like ICE, DEA, and Secret Service appear on the left side (less likely to be perceived as knowledge institutions).

@adambonica.bsky.social showed ideology predicts which agencies experience DOGE layoffs. But what other factors could be driving this?

Using a generative LLM-derived measure, I find agencies perceived as knowledge institutions are more likely to experience layoffs, even controlling for ideology. 🧵

Apply to present at Virtual IPES! We ask accepted authors to name their discussant “dream team” and we’ll try to make that happen, with the support of the wonderful IPE community (thank you). We particularly encourage submissions from graduate students and early-career scholars.

In my seminar today, one of my students said, “Well, I don’t know how the Internet was like in 2001.” And the rest of them shrugged as they also don’t know.

How much do I tell them. 🤣

My robot amusement continues: A robot made the latte but fails to actually pass the latte to the customer. There are two hotlines to call, the guy called one of them and then got asked to call another number. He’s fascinated by this and didn’t seem too upset. 🤣

I prefer a human making my bubble tea, does that make me a Luddite? 🧋(It was bad and also had zero reviews on Google maps.)

The TimeOut Magazine named a neighborhood near the University of Toronto as one of the “coolest in the world.”

One of the reasons cited were the existence of these “pubs where professors, students […] grab a pint.”

Yep, right, I’m sure we are very cool …🤣

The political science behind the Bidens’ biting dogs The Bidens’ two-year-old German Shepherd, Commander, left the White House last week. CNN reports that the dog has bitten even more individuals than the 11

Did you know that Democrats are more permissive (pet) parents? See @tesler.bsky.social's latest piece on the political science behind the Bidens’ biting dogs.

BONUS: this post has pictures of very, very good 🐶s.
