there's a lot i left out that was fun to try and convey visually! i fell in love w the charas after developing them, so i'm still playing with vanilla (made her into a psych ward gf with 1 of my sonas lmao) and i would love to draw more of the cocoa/vanilla moments leading up to the illo...

I was hoping even if it wasn't totally apparent they were related, that they at least had some connection or history. I almost left the promo without the "bro & sis" text, but felt like it was necessary context. I also like the detail here of cocoa having his hand around vanilla's waist. i doubled that up sitting her in his lap in the final promo.

another promo thumb. the backstory i was writing involves vanilla as a "freshly trans little brother who started crossdressing for his older brother's sexual attention and decided he wanted to keep being a little girl." the big detail i'd like to reveal is that their attraction was obviously mutual, but cocoa couldn't reckon having feelings for vanilla (despite still going through with them). bringing her to the room party was an opportunistic move he chose out of desperation. "why don't you bring that slutty little brother of yours... maybe you can finally work up the nuts to fuck him" in reality, vanilla wouldn't have minded if cocoa took advantage of her, but the toll of possibly being used by anyone else is really what broke her. If it was just the two of them, he could've done anything he wanted to her. he could've had it all, if he wasn't so scared. I love that missed connection kind of scenario... especially when the end result is so messy... ^^

writing! i thought it would be fun to develop a little story to tell without any text. I liked holding onto the detail that cocoa and vanilla were siblings until the promo. another version had bookended pics of vanilla being drugged and finally peering into the camera, bloody. more info in alts ^^

#1 in pink!!! i liked hiding a bit of green in the high key yellow by using lots of warm tones in the pinks. the dark magenta sways between purple and maroon thanks to the near-black indigo and coral fighting over it... i do think the monochrome has a nice dreamy look

#1 in pink and green! I think splitting things up between two colors really helped kick certain things out and push others back. Im glad i committed to an even greener yellow-white. I like the blacklight feel that this palette has, which is probably why i ended up sticking with it. the teal lighting feels nice and sickly to me... it's always easy to think another possibility might have been better bc there's no one "solution" to an image, but I'm glad i went with this after all!

palette pass! This stage felt almost impossible because I had about 100 different versions that this could've been lmfao. they all looked good!!!! so here's a look into another universe where it was mostly pink and purples haha. ultimately im rly happy with the pink/green purple/yellow look i got ^^

honestly i think im happier with this first illo as a whole. there are always tiny things i wish i caught or did differently but u just take it with you to the next piece. the perspective on both of these is intentionally kinda fucked up/not grounded to illicit an off-kilter feel. But i do generally have a hard time spatially with digital work, i can just feel a space better on paper lol. happy with how the expressions turned out. geoff makes me sick to look at sometimes LMAO.. i think the white smoke is a nice touch too, sometimes i like a nice graphic key element..

I wish i made a little more time to push the sense of scale on this one, maybe a lower angle would've solved that. I think ultimately geoff could've been bigger/closer to the camera and maybe the deer or the shark could've disappeared back a little more. and idk maybe the bg couldve been more mostly dark? i left it here because the value pass didn't account for the final flash shadows i planned to add in the end. for designing the final as i went, i'm still happy w a lot of the details and i feel that way about the final too. Lots of yummy little pockets im proud of, and overall an image i think works really well as a response to the first...

value pass! locking in the linework and tightening up values here took maybe the longest? I had the first illo mapped out but foolishly jumped straight into the second from the rough thumb up. puzzling the second digitally had its pros and cons, time enforces decision making. just gotta keep movin!
