If his patchy red crown doesn't give it away, the details of the eye are clearly visible in this close-up portrait of a male Ladder-backed Woodpecker, which leads yours truly to believe this is a young or juvie male, since their eye color darkens to a reddish hue as they mature. Now you know. And the finale to my Ladder-back trifecta!
