A life model of Sinosauropteryx posed behind a real piece of fossilized Edmontosaurus skin.
The entire exhibit cabinet featuring specimens from the Weis museum. The top halves display specimens and photographs that teach visitors about bird evolution. The lower halves of the cabinet feature flourite and quartz mineral specimens.
The upper left section of the cabinet, which focuses on the common ancestry that birds share with dinosaurs.
The upper right section of the cabinet, which calls attention to features and behaviors that visitors can observe in modern birds that they share with their reptile relatives.
Happy #FossilFriday! I am absolutely thrilled to share the first new exhibit for the History Museum at the Castle to feature specimens from the Weis collection: bird evolution, flourite, & quartz. Many thanks to B Danz, T Green, & J Taylor for their photos & art!

Happy #MosasaurMonday from Eustace, the holotype skull of Jormungandr walhallensis discovered in North Dakota by the NDGS.
We were tasked with taking this not-quite-complete skull (right) and digitally restoring it for display at the NDGS as well as a library just a few miles from the dig site π§ͺ

Join us Tuesday, November 4th, at 8:30 pm Eastern time for all of your questions about NANOTYRANNUS, and why we're all #backinhell after Lindsay Zanno and our very own @jgn-paleo.bsky.social published the paper of the year!

The figure used in my News & Views commentary. I generated the CT-based rendering of the holotype skull of Nanotyrannus lancensis (CMNH 7541), based on a recent scan. The lower image was done by the Nature art department.
Here's the free link to the print version that I'm permitted to share: https://rdcu.be/eNv94. You can't download it but you can screen-capture its two pages if you really need a copy.
Our casts of (bottom) the holotype of Nanotyrannus lancensis (CMNH 7541), (middle) the newly named holotype of N. lethaeus (BMRP 2002.4.1), and (top) T. rex (AMNH 5027). We published on CMNH 7541 in 2010 (http://bit.ly/3X5nCGm).
Today's bombshell in @nature.com by Lindsay Zanno & James Napoli @jgn-paleo.bsky.social (bit.ly/4qBE6ng) shows that putative juvvy T. rex fossils actually are Nanotyrannus. I reviewed the manuscript, so Nature invited me to write the News & Views commentary. Free link: rdcu.be/eNv94 π¦

This digitally painted piece honors the survivor spirit of the coyote by tracing its lineage from the first cells of life to the animal trotting our landscapes today. Below the horizon, carefully chosen ancestors mark pivotal moments in adaptation, each contributing to the form and survivor we see today. Above the horizon, Coyote stands alert at the center, framed by both Denverβs skyline and a mountain backdrop, symbols of their ability to thrive in cities as well as wilderness. Embedded in the ground are the skulls and bones of carnivores whose lineages ended long ago, emphasizing Coyoteβs persistence in contrast.

The thread gives descriptions of all the extinct organisms shown in this piece (not to scale)

Two quail embryos. The individual on the left has dark pigment in it's eye while the individual on the right has no visible pigment in the eye.
Two leopard gecko embryos. The individual on the left has dark pigment in it's eye while the individual on the right has no visible pigment in the eye.
I was collecting #quail #embryos this morning and found an individual with albinism! Look at the lack of pigment in the retinal epithelium! Reminds me of finding a leopard #gecko embryo with the same condition during my PhD.

no offense, but when I am complaining about some aspect of the professional world sucking, please take a moment to think before commenting "well, I am in this field, and I did not share this experience". congratulations dear, happy for you, but I really don't know how to respond to that.

two stylised Protosphyraena, the one on the left is looking up at the one on the right
Protosphyraena is an extinct kind of predatory fish with a short bill similar to swordfish but with buck-teeth and thin elongate pelvic fins that originate from underneath the pectoral fins
stylised Protosphyraena concepts, honestly quite happy with these and will probably make more with different taxa

A very toothy Plesioplatecarpus skull laid out bone by bone on a red tablecloth. Curatorial hand for scale
I missed #MosasaurMonday but holy moly, Winnie is prepped!
Here's the main part of the skull, without the palate laid out. She came out great and im so happy she's covered in pathologies. Just like me, we both have interesting skeletal injuries. Lower Niobrara, 86.5 million years old π§ͺ
