I'm thinking big sweeping fantasies like LOTR, with a multi-book story arc, a sense of scope/history (i.e. a world shaped by ancient forces) and immersive world-building. You are right about the dated nature of fantasy written earlier.

Rereading Spirit Sight by Ross Hightower. First in the Spirit Song series.
I have found that with some other book series as well. They aren't well written but they scratch an itch that makes them a satisfying (or compulsive) read none the less.
Our Firkins and Fantasy epic fantasy book club just read a quirky fantasy, Dionysus in Wisconsin, by an indie author EH Lupton. Highly recommend as a very weird read - in the best way possible. ehlupton.com/bibliography...

For old school epic fantasy readers - how important is the cover in your decision to read? I feel like a troglodyte but if a cover looks too modern, I am less inclined to consider a book if I'm looking for classic epic fantasy.
