In the quiet of an open field, a colossal face emerges from nature itself. At over 13 feet tall, Sarah Deppe’s Exhaling Dissolution invites us to listen to the Earth’s unspoken voice. Created from cottonwood bark found on the ground, this sculpture represents both the beauty and fragility of our natural world. Deppe’s choice of material is intentional—bark and wood, borrowed from nature, will one day return to the Earth. This piece, inspired by research into deforestation, reflects our responsibility to protect the environment and stands as an avatar of the Earth’s struggle against pollution. The title, Exhaling Dissolution, speaks to the pollutants we release into the air daily. But the sculpture offers more than a message of despair. It carries a mysterious, sphinx-like presence, leaving space for interpretation. In its weathered form, you can feel the murmurs of wisdom and warning as it interacts with the open elements. This is not just a sculpture; it’s a reflection of us—of what we take, what we give back, and how we choose to listen.
