He was the author of {car}, {effects}, {Rcmdr}, ... and numerous influential books. I will miss him greatly.

Problems with iconv on macOS - The R Blog
Iconv is a POSIX function for converting strings from one character encoding to another. MacOS 14.0 ships with a version of iconv that can cause crashes and incorrect conversions. This #RStats blog post by Tomas Kalibera describes the workarounds in R.
