Oooh, looks lovely. Thanks!
Doing an Earthsea reread!
I'm about two-thirds of the way through "The Farthest Shore,"
and looking forward to the next books, which I've never read, all new!
I asked "who here has met an 80 year old?"
Every hand went up.
"They remember WWII. How many of you have ever met a kindergartener?"
Every hand went up.
"They DON'T remember the pandemic. For the rest of your lives, when they want to know about it, you're the historical sources they'll turn to."
"The shelves fill with more and more of less and less. In the great and exponentially-growing library, the new volumes are his own summaries, and summaries of summaries, and so on into dim infinity."

I also started playing thos a couple weeks ago! It's a thing of joy.
"And living in hope is a discipline, a practice that can be learned."
Also, here's @leemandelo.bsky.social's very excellent series of essays reading the series:

you can start with, like, *everyone* who was a dick to Data
Bruce Maddox, Kivas Fajo, Ira Graves (who wanted to dissect, collect, and inhabit him, respectively)
when you win a small concession you just get to keep yelling btw. one time a local official said to me "you people are never happy" and like: correct! it is not our job to be happy with compromise! it's our job to be annoying forever actually
Ooh, I loved this one
We still speak in hushed whispers of the men who gave their lives on D-Day,
followed by the women and the genderqueer individuals on E-Day and I-Day, respectively
Damn straight.
You need the weird little character episodes to care about the stakes in the big episodes.
What is the Dominion War without “Babel” & “Facets” making you love the characters who could (and do) die? Or “It’s Only a Paper Moon” to show us the pain it leaves in its wake?
well this sounds delightful!
Consuming nutrients is for weak stomachs. Alpha males like myself only eat fast cars and machine guns

Another Hugo nomination-time thread! And in this one, I'll be talking about novellas.
(this thread will probably go long, sorry-not-sorry)

I don't want to hear how powerless you are.
I want to hear about how you are turning over every last statute to find every piece of power you have and leveraging it to flip the tables. That is what ordinary Americans are doing every day: using whistles and love to try to help their neighbors.
Can you expand on what "done right" means, for us curious neophytes?
The FCC just opened public comments on SpaceX's plan to launch a million satellites to do AI compute in space. Under the current proposal, an environmental review won't be required. Please consider submitting a public comment to oppose this damaging plan.

This is Bryan. Once a week, he takes a shelter pup on a New York City adventure in his 'Adopt Me' backpack, hoping someone will fall in love. He films their big day out, and almost every dog he's featured has found a forever home.

Literally started reading it with my youngest this week. It's a treasure.
This series has been out for however many decades and it is *still* a consistent circulator in the kids section of any library. I never have the full run on my shelves because there are always volumes checked out.
