A small update on this, but I brought my situation to my manager after some other teams raised the same issues I've had and I'm feeling a lot better about what I'm doing now. Not used to my manager having my back on something this important tbh.

I begged like 2 weeks ago if we could just drop the proposal I'm tasked with working on and just move forward with the other teams plan and I was basically told "no" but in a lot more words. This company has a problem with sunk cost fallacy and it is pervasive and everywhere.

I get told we'll have a discussion on our options for tools and then a meeting comes around and I get told they already made a decision without any input. I ask if there is even a document explaining their choice and its literally just entirely based on vibes.

This job sucks and I hate it here. All of the fun has been sucked out of this job and I wake up every morning dreading whatever fucking bullshit that doesn't fucking matter is going to be shoved in front of me as though it were the end of the world if it isn't resolved immediately.

I'm literally sitting here at my desk right now with a word doc open for the past 7 hours debating if I should actually update it like I told my manager I would or just going to bed and not doing my job until they fire me so I can apply for unemployment payments instead of just quitting.

Over a decade ago, the late Joe Armstrong (a creator of Erlang) said in a Q&A panel that the largest problem we would have in a decade's time is getting different languages to talk to each other without the C ABI (or C++ ABI). He was right, and I think about that a lot.

Every time a new language pop up people discuss the merits of the language: can it handle the C ABI? What about memory safety? Is it "pythonic" where every maroon repeats "explicit is better than implicit" but then they say "of course" when you ask if you can add a float and an integer w/out casting

"We need to get these languages to talk to C++" says every programming language looking to replace C++. "This is a zero sum game. We are in the Thunder Dome of programming languages. Only one language will win. This is normal and healthy and reflects the current state of things" they say in unison.

"What will the next big programming language be?" says every programmer who does not use the (currently) most widely deployed operating system.

"It will be this one", says a programmer pointing to a language that cannot interoperate with COM.

It's not been an issue for me tbqh. There are quite a few but a lot of them are specialized for specific use cases that are rare edge cases due to things like ObjC bridging, COM support, etc.

They really did make a better C++. Took them a while, but they did it.

But I am having fun writing code for the first time in a long time. I didn't experience this with Rust (I experienced it using their tooling), and I didn't experience it with Zig, or D, or any other languages in this space.

The project itself is kind of a PITA because it's a custom filesystem where they changed ASCII. Not all of it. Just some of it. 😔

I haven't had enough time this week to fully complete that project I started on Monday, but I can confidently say that even though I've run into 1 or 2 warts with Swift I think this is the language for me...
