Hi Johnjack! I like the cut of your jib.
It's politically strategic right now for we leftists to be highlighting rising gas prices; on the other hand, we shouldn't lose sight that, in a fairer world, the price of gas would include the fact that it's making life here unlivable. Gas should be shockingly expensive (yes, I drive a car).
What's your Markwayne name? His parents apparently mashed together two of his uncles names. I have lots of options here, but - if I were to stick with my maternal side - I'd be Earljimmy.
Look at these three very different primates!
Something so beautiful about listening to students talk through a concept, draw on a complex reading, weigh its strengths, weaknesses, and oddities; how can these skills and practices not be central to the world we want to live in?
Yes...and, I think there's a certain kind of perverse logic: being in this club means having a massive victim/persecution complex, and the bigger your security detail, the more you are persecuted. It's persecution performativity.
to be adopted is, all too often, to be unwittingly recruited for a role in other people’s trauma-rooted fantasy play.
Gotta talk more about these Hornets, @zachlowenba.bsky.social @yourmandevine.bsky.social @michaelvpina.bsky.social The vibes (and the ball) haven't been this good since Bogues and Grandmama. How good can BMill get? How do they approach the deadline? Can they beat Pistons and Knicks in 7 games?
Statement from the National Basketball Players Association:
i got the way i am today in no small part because of growing up being told, in effect, “it’s really not important for you to know where and who you came from. Actually, it’s SO really-not-important that we made a law that requires us to hide it from you forever” 🥚
Al Green sings REM's Everybody Hurts, and it's kinda perfect. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cjr8...
CA people could really do #adoptees a solid by calling their reps *immediately* to voice support for SB-381, a clean bill giving CA adoptees access to their original birth certificates.
Shall, Buy Shan't
Slightly diminish a band:

Check out Dr. KD Thompson's lovely piece on language socialization in adulthood in the OUP Handbook of Language Socialization that I'm editing (W/Dr. Elise Berman). Really cool piece that highlights "unlearning sex/gender" normativity as a language socialization process, among other innovations.
Weird. Let me see if I can fix that.
Such a cool piece! Glad to see it out.
California adoptees and advocates: WE HAVE A CLEAN ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE BILL! Senator Wahab has introduced SB 381. Letters are due to the senate judiciary committee on 1/6 at 12pm PST and to the health committee on 1/7 at 12pm. More info and resources at the CAAR site
Charlotte Hornets punching OKC in the mouth tonight (!).
Go Hornets. We're not winning much, but we are close to something.
Get Zach back on bluesky! Also: go Hornets.
If only a convenient pretzel-tasting snack already existed, maybe our dear goldfish would not be put to such purposes.
No advice, just lots of support. My adoptive Mom would never ever do this.
My new article "The Caveman in the Mirror: Masculinity and Paleofantasy" is now available via early access from Signs and Society! It's part of a special issue, "Chronotopes of Gender," that I coedited with @cat-tebaldi.bsky.social. Full issue will be out in December! doi.org/10.1017/sas....
Bears: the worst best team you've ever seen. Maybe the most fun, too. What a win.
Not sure what to say here. Do you want it to come with AI or something?
Unintentional truth-telling: I found a job ad that describes its salary as "commiserate with experience."
I think the story of dam removal along the Klamath and Eel rivers in CA, the Indigenous activism that has made this possible, and the story of the return of salmon (and its effects) is the most hopeful story in the whole damn US of A. Frankly, it's world-historical. A faint sign of real change.
Trump's "affordability agenda" (50 year mortgages, and a $2000 check) are such obvious attempts to throw a table scrap or two onto the floor for us. I mean, the 50 year mortgage idea is more trap than scrap: it's a new vehicle for creating more profit over the long haul.
