19.11.2024 21:08 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Two books by Palestinian authors laid flat on a black table. The first is Minor Detail by Adania Shibli translated by Elisabeth Jaquette. The second is The Book of Disappearance by Ibtisam Azem translated by Sinan Antoon.
Minor Detail by Adania Shibli translated by Elisabeth Jaquette Minor Detail is a novella split into two parts; the first tells the story of the brutality experienced by a Palestinian girl at the hands of the IOF (Israeli Occupying Forces) in 1949, a year after the first Nakba; the second, set decades later, follows a Palestinian woman who learns of this ‘minor detail’ in history and becomes obsessive in her pursuit of gaining further knowledge regarding the atrocity. The style of writing and tone in both parts were different. The former was clinical and monotonous, whereas the latter was lyrical yet disorienting - it worked quite well in context.
The Book of Disappearance by Ibtisam Azem, translated by Sinan Antoon What would happen if all the Palestinians living under occupation suddenly vanished? Azem contends with this question in the novel. Alaa is one of the Palestinians who disappears. We see his perspective mainly through diary entries which I found to be particularly moving and evocative. Another character we follow is Ariel (his ‘friend’ and a settler) who, disbelieving of the news at first, enters Alaa’s apartment in search of him only to stumble across his diary which he begins to read, thinking it may provide some answers.
Afterthoughts Although the premise of each book is different, the authors build a haunting narrative rooted in the Palestinian experience and life under colonial occupation; contrary to what the occupiers (settlers) may want others to believe, life does not get better for those under occupation. There’s so much more I could say about these books, but I’ll keep any further thoughts I have to myself because the less you know, the better the reading experience. If quiet, affecting books are your cup of tea, I would highly recommend reading both.
My short, reflective thoughts on Minor Detail by Adania Shibli translated by Elisabeth Jaquette and The Book of Disappearance by Ibtisam Azem translated by Sinan Antoon.

I'm currently reading The Once and Future Sex by @goingmedieval.bsky.social and I'm learning so much about what life was like for women in the medieval period. It's definitely challenged my thinking and is an engaging read.

Today is the anniversary of the St Brice's Day massacre in 1002, when King Æthelred ordered the murder of all the Danes in England. Gunhild was one possible victim of the massacre.
