A M8.8 earthquake just ruptured the subduction zone offshore Russiaβs Kamchatka peninsula. This is one of the worldβs truly huge earthquakes, and a triggered tsunami is currently traveling across the Pacific ocean.
This same fault ruptured on July 20th in a M7.4, and last August in a M7.1.
This is a superb illustration of seismic waves travelling around the earth.

After 39 days of quiet, the clock resets.
At 5:14 p.m., a beige-gray column of ash punches skyward from Mount St. Helensβthe first eruption visible in daylight since May 18.
Two more pulses follow at 6:25 and 7:01. At peak, ash tops 59,000 feet. It's a big show.

Surprised & delighted to see JOIDES Resolution in Kristiansand, Norway where we visited today. She & the scientists on board have made huge contributions to our science over many years. One of many projects which made the USA a world leader in science. Now being trashed by ignorance and greed.

A view of the long barn at Harmondsworth which was built to store grain in the fifteenth century.
The foundations of the barn are constructed from coursed rubble masonry which is predominantly composed of large (up to 79 cm long) blocks of ferricrete. Flint is also used.
Detail of the geological appearance of ferricrete with my finger for scale. The stone is composed of a rough breccia of flint stained a rusty red colour. The Ferricrete in this case is an iron-cemented flint breccia of Pleistocene to Holocene age. Read full details in the document in the link in the post.
Ferricrete is one of Londonβs least known building stones but it was important in the Medieval Period. Harmondsworth Great Barn (1426) is a rare secular use. This building will be demolished or moved if the Heathrow 3rd runway goes ahead β¦ londongeopartnership.org.uk/wp/wp-conten... #urbangeology

The seismic swarm in Greece continues - and GPS stations on Santorini show that the island itself is deforming, signaling likely movement of magma deep in the crust. In our latest post, we explore a new detailed seismic catalog and come up with a possible interpretation.
