To a Life in Despair

Don't. Don't go to the bridge.
Don't wake in your coat in the morning light
and carry those stones into the river.
Don't find your father's pistol
in the attic, hidden in the family albums.
Don't. Don't pour the pills
into the whiskey, the walls dissolving
like your childhood. Don't, just don't choose
not to wake.

Stay. Just stay.
Tell yourself you'll do it tomorrow.
You can always walk alone into the darkness.
But not yet. Not yet. Not this soon.
I don't have a reason
to give you. All I have
is the morning, and the autumn wind,
and the child you once were
in the darkness, looking at the new moon
through the ruins, saying
save me, save me, save me,
and the moon looking back
with her vacant
face
saying I promise, I stone-
cold promise
that the face of utter
hopelessness
is the face of something just about to change.

Jane Goodall, one of the world's most renowned conservationists, first found fame in the early 1960s for her paradigm-busting work as a primatologist. In 2021, David Marchese interviewed her about making the world place and the usefulness of hope in the face of fear and anger. nyti.ms/3KvuvOn

Listen to Jane Goodall’s final β€” and urgent β€”Β message Her final interviews are essential listening for everyone.

Jane Goodall, one of the most influential environmental figures in human history, has died at 91 while touring the country to deliver an urgent message about nature and human existence.

β€œWe’re destroying the planet,” she said last week during the Forbes Sustainability Leaders Summit in NYC.

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

My latest:”Through gossamer tributes, Kirk’s cruel condemnation of transgender people & his racist throwback views abt Black Americans were no longer anathema but instead are being treated as just another political view to be respectfully debated β€”like a position on tax rates or health care policy.”

Illinois professors face threats after landing on Charlie Kirk group watchlist An online database compiled by a group affiliated with slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk identifies close to 50 Illinois college instructors it labels "radical professors."

Nearly 50 college instructors across #Illinois landed on #CharlieKirk's β€œProfessor Watchlist.” @wbez.org reached out to all of them and found the list triggered hateful messages, threats of rape or death, and intensification since Kirk's killing.

Earlier this year, I wrote an op-ed about the importance of NSF/NIH funding for Kansans.

I am THRILLED to see a candidate for my home state who names science cuts for what they are (bad + illegal!) and promises to step up to the plate on that issue, and many others (Medicare/Medicaid, USAID, etc!)
