see, for javascript this makes some sense: you can operate on floats as if they were 32-bit integers, and otherwise you get a 53-bit-ish integer.

but php's documentation says "float sizes are platform and compilation-flags dependent and no guarantees are given by the language", which is... odd.

NOTE: PHP promotes integers to floats on overflow, which is likely quite unique behaviour for all languages considered here. Though, since JS only has floats, their behaviour somewhat match.

also "the language gives you fixed-size integers and then auto-promotes them on overflow" is something i would expect for most high level languages, however "and auto-promotes them on overflow *to a floating point of possibly less precision*" is not really what i had in mind...

you would think that by now programming languages would have figured out how numbers work but unfortunately every programming language does numbers slightly different because of course

whatever the directors of watatabe were thinking of for this episode made it so incredibly funny :')

the whole program for day 1 part 1 is 37 lines of low-level high-level ANF IR (i.e.: something at a level similar to LLVM, but using ANF instead of SSA), but half of it is just statically defining the input data as machine structures to avoid having to parse it.

so it's a bit funny that solving advent of code in my VM's assembly language somehow results in shorter programs than me solving it in my proper high-level language :'>

(i am over-engineering it by giving each thing a distinct type + operations, but still)

"how do you traverse this binary tree" isnt something you have to ask when you have one name for the left branch and one name for the right branch and you kinda just agglutinate all of them together in a single word, like the goddesses intended languages to work

i sometimes joke about lisp naming their functions (car) (cdr) and (caadadaddddaaar) but honestly it makes a lot of sense when you think about it and if you reason about software as following linked cons cells it is quite convenient

it's not even incidental because they posted a lot of unofficial fanart of the girlies being "very good friends" along with very open to interpretation captions like "love is love"
