Le bec est la principale caractéristique de l'espèce, car il ressemble à un sabot. La forme du bec apparaît, en fait, très adaptée à la pêche en eaux troubles, basses et encombrées de végétaux.

Dead tree in deadvlei entourré par la dune Big Daddy au lever du jour. Dead Vlei est entouré des dunes les plus élevées du monde, dont la plus haute, surnommée « Big Daddy » ou « Crazy Dune », culmine entre 300 et 400 mètres (350 mètres en moyenne). Cette cuvette s'est formée lorsque des inondations y ont détourné une rivière, créant alors un marais permettant à des acacias du désert (Acacia erioloba) d'y pousser.

Arbre pétrifié à Deadvlei en Namibie au lever du jour. Impression que le temps s'est arrété dans cette bulle desertique loin de la civilisation.
