FreeRepublic.com is hardly the white-hot-center of the wingnut universe these days, but I've been following it for decades and have a sense of its culture. So that's one place I go to read the entrails.

So what are the Freepers saying?

Yes. I heard from a source that Red state governors were discussing a federation of state National Guards, for which private funding was getting raised, to deploy to the border to fight the "invaders" In the event of a Democratic presidential victory. I have little idea what to do about that.

I'm not saying I have any answers. Just that we need to be very supple in trying to figure out what is going on. Certainly, we should avoid premature declarations of victory based just upon what happens in Washington.

This is very much a historian speaking.

I'm not predicting anything. I hate predictions. I'm just saying if that possibility is not contemplated in our strategies, then they are not really strategies.

There's no way you can follow right-wing discussions and not fear that if, ICE withdraws from Minneapolis, a small but heavily armed group of people may say that, since the Globalists have sold us out again, we have to start shooting the invaders ourselves now.

Favorable poll number, minor congressional defection: great! But be the game has other variables as well now, under conditions of fascism. Armed force is one: from the state, lawlessly; or from civilians.

Remember, always: the horse race odds don't matter if they burn down the track.

It's easy to imagine Trump's inner circle talking this way, persuading themselves to the concluding that they have no choice but need to double down Minneapolis--or else, think of what the mobs we stirred up will do. (And they'd be right to worry! Rampant armed vigilantism is possible!)
