At @rickperlstein.bsky.social's recommendation I read Thomas Ricks' Waging A Good War, on the Civil Rights Movement as a military campaign. Quite useful. Dovetails well with @erinrpineda.bsky.social's Seeing Like An Activist. Both look at nonviolence as it really was, not how many pretend it was.

My friend agrees.

Pretty much what I intuited, that treating it, functionally, as a martial equivalent to the IDF = bonkers.

I don't often talk politics with my friend in Gaza, but in a discussion following from an anguished query from him last week about whether the bombing might really actually stop, I asked him whether he thought Hamas can be counted on not to plan future massacres. He replied:
