From this I surmise that the two shooters heard "he's got a gun!" as, "you can shoot this person who humiliated you and get away with it."
(And, of course, they might be correct.)

"ICE has to take off the kid gloves" is pretty much the take these days in the right.

I had a lot more on Klan/neo-Nazi stuff in my last book, on the rise of Reagan 1976-81, then I ever imagined I would, pre-Trump. It helped me recognize that it was a real force by late in those years.

I'm dumb.
Our fear can feed our valor. It already has, and always will. People are drawn to putting their bodies on the line for liberty, when the struggle is genuine.

FreeRepublic.com is hardly the white-hot-center of the wingnut universe these days, but I've been following it for decades and have a sense of its culture. So that's one place I go to read the entrails.
So what are the Freepers saying?
Yes. I heard from a source that Red state governors were discussing a federation of state National Guards, for which private funding was getting raised, to deploy to the border to fight the "invaders" In the event of a Democratic presidential victory. I have little idea what to do about that.
26.01.2026 21:33 — 👍 20 🔁 3 💬 0 📌 0 I'm not saying I have any answers. Just that we need to be very supple in trying to figure out what is going on. Certainly, we should avoid premature declarations of victory based just upon what happens in Washington.
This is very much a historian speaking.
I'm not predicting anything. I hate predictions. I'm just saying if that possibility is not contemplated in our strategies, then they are not really strategies.

This is an argument about, and for, political journalists, political scholars, political strategists in the Democratic Party, who have done a terrible job thinking creatively about what's in front of their face, why their incumbent paradigms for thinking about politics are no longer viable.

It's easy to imagine Trump's inner circle talking this way, persuading themselves to the concluding that they have no choice but need to double down Minneapolis--or else, think of what the mobs we stirred up will do. (And they'd be right to worry! Rampant armed vigilantism is possible!)

...because if they didn't do X (where X might "shut down the hippies protesting the war"), right-wingers would explode in rage and do something (or pressure Nixon to do something) that's even worse. (I'm recalling a line like, "think what the real fascists will do if we don't X.")
