Little brake from brumation for some in-house foraging of this handsome lad. Terrarium warmth is up as South Australia's ambient day temperature is way down, and we are finally getting some beautiful rainfall. Even still, the sound of the rain often sets off an indoor frog chorus.

Ceduna late afternoon winters light. Fresh breeze makes my hand cold as I dive them into pockets and ignore the crisp chill on my nose, cheeks, and ears and lean into the beauty of the cold.

New map highlights complex web of marine migrations
Where are all the marine animals going? Given the vastness of the oceans, the countless species that live in them, and the lack of a global data set, itβs not easy to figure that out. However, theβ¦
A new database on marine migratory patterns aims to address gaps in the knowledge of policymakers and conservationists.
The database highlights the interconnected nature of marine migrations, and underscores the need for cross-border collaboration in conservation efforts.

Native Australian tea trees stand on a limestone sea shore in the golden afternoon sunlight. Blue sky with fluffy white cloud 4/8th filling the background, yellow tall grass gently blowing in light breeze in left lower corner and the tea tree siloettes dominate the scene with their low growing, twisted, dwarf looking form. A calm, relaxed and peaceful seascape that was filled with the calls of many native birds.

Herring population loses migration 'memory' after heavy fishing
Hear the biggest stories from the world of science | 07 May 2025
Humans strip ecosystems of eldersβthen wonder why they collapse. Older animals carry memory: where to spawn, migrate, survive. Even plants pass resilience through ancient roots and fungal networks. When we erase the old, we donβt just take lifeβwe erase wisdom.

Lethal second-generation rat poisons are killing endangered quolls and Tasmanian devils
Second generation rat poisons are so potent that theyβre banned for home use in Europe and North America. But here, you can pick them up at Bunnings or Coles.
For 7 years we have been studying how rat poisons affect native wildlife. Our initial work focussed on owls, then we found it in reptiles and today we have released our world first study showing it is killing Australiaβs threatened quolls and the Tasmanian Devil. theconversation.com/lethal-secon...

An understatement to say in South Australia we are going through at big dry, many below average rainfall and heat records have been sadly broken. On the coast this morning we had probably 0.4mm 'rain' and I love how even that is enough to wake the moss. #wildmoments #moss

Eyre Peninsula blue gum (Eucalyptus petiolaris) woodlands are about a week into their flowering, and it's stunning! At a time when nectar sources are incredibly lean every tree, including this planted roadside one, is important. Sound on to hear the wild rainbow lorikeets and wattle birds.
