Do ombudsmen still exist? Are there any newsrooms that still employ ombudsmen? Do any local newsrooms (from any country) have an active ombudsman?

Any leads are much appreciated! (This is not for a study (yet?), I'm curious)

Turning off all the AI capabilities in Zoom, Office Suite, etc. I cannot stress enough the urgency of keeping our conversations and work as private as possible in the current context.

Starlink in Sudan: A lifeline or war facilitator? Sudan's conflict has crippled telecommunication as both sides leverage and disrupt internet services to gain control.

6. Finally, one of our most recent projects looked at Data Governance from different contexts. One of them was Sudan. We tried to understand what happens with people's data and their access to it during conflict and war. globalvoices.org/2024/08/20/s...

Undertones: Portugal and the myth of the good colonizer In the 1950s, Portugal's dictatorship overhauled the country's national identity and embraced the theory of the good colonizer. What traces are left of that narrative today?

5. I think the myth of the "good colonizer" is not exclusive as a narrative from Portugal, but seeing how this colonial idea is enforced among new authoritarian and racist voices was very revealing. globalvoices.org/2023/10/31/u...

Is China exporting its surveillance state to Venezuela? One of the largest Chinese defense companies has been pointed out for providing the Venezuelan government software to block access to the Internet and to spy on its detractors.

2. We did a loooong investigation on narratives about Chinese international relations, esp regarding the BRI. This one in particular is from 2021, but also helps to understand the surveillance state in Venezuela: globalvoices.org/2021/09/28/i...

How identity-driven conflicts fuel Ethiopia's incendiary social media rhetoric Unity Park aimed to tell the story of all Ethiopians and celebrate the country’s diversity. But social media revealed politicized, nationalistic reactions along ethnic lines: Amhara and Oromo.

A few highlights from the Observatory:

The Observatory combines research and reporting to bring clarity over very complex themes and trends. It is a methodology I personally apply to my daily life, especially as information ecosystems (news mediums, social media, etc) become more chaotic. I invite you all to get to know it!
