I've never yet been sent a plasmid by anyone that is exactly what it was claimed to be. One time it had a different antibiotic marker. Another time, I got 4 clones for protein expression that made no protein. Turns out they had no start codon. Why did you even have those in the first place?!

Maybe March, I think "spring" is the official line...

Colleagues of mine @naomilpollock.bsky.social and @alice-rothnie.bsky.social are at a BBSRC event today and have been told that the RM call is paused, until maybe March, to allow them to transition to a open call rather than 3 deadlines a year. Nice that this is widely communicated 😉

I'm on B this time and the, allegedly, C in July but I'm guessing we'll be told to fund 1 grant per panel by that point or something. Feels like there is a system entirely built on free labour that they have now said, nah, you've had enough cash

Yep, got my ResearchFish email today. And 9 grants to review for March panel. Enthusiastic about both in the current climate.

Thankfully I can download all my data of me clicking whatever option requires me to put the least manual information into Researchfish. No, I genuinely have no idea of the destination of any of my researchers...

Two of my favourites too, along with
"It's not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren't doing it." which is basically my management philosophy at work

My first ever scientific paper was in Yeast. Not quite as long ago as those but we did have to fax the submission to the editor and they gave us the decision by post...

So few people have seen our planet from the outside. Maybe if we all did, it would teach us a little humility and respect for this little blue dot

Introduce yourself with 5 animals you've seen in the wild (Birmingham UK edition):

A hedgehog
A seagull that steals crisps from a shop
A pigeon with fewer toes than wings
Half a dead badger
Two foxes having a very good time

Excited and pleased (I think!) to announce that I'm the new Head of Biosciences @astonuniversity.bsky.social. Hopefully continued success for the new Department in an exciting School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Biosciences!

I went to the world's worst zoo. It only had a single dog. It was a Shih Tzu

This episode of Mark Steele's in Town about Handsworth is brilliant. It's the Birmingham I grew up in, moved back to and work in, at one of the most diverse and integrated Universities in the UK. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...

Birmingham, my home city, is a fantastic city, with fantastic people- a success story. It has its problems, like anywhere. But the obsession the online right has with it is as transparent as it gets.

Was a great catch and hopefully Cricinfo get her name right as she deserves those stats from today. Nice to see the Phoenix women actually win at home for once! Look a stronger team than the last 2 years.
