What do you mean? The terms already exist in the Copenhagen Criteria, the issue is the U.K. getting to the point where the it meets them, which could take quite a while if UKG keeps fanning around trying to appease Trump.

On a Baltic cruise a few years ago I was struck by the way public libraries in big cities that we visited had an area dedicated to displaying information about the EU, something I don't recall seeing in UK public spaces.

So you don't have any child developmental evidence, you just know it because it's a societal norm. That's fine, I can safely ignore you.

What developmental changes happen between 16 and 18 that render 18yos capable of voting and 16yos not capable? Remember, until not many years ago 18yos werenโ€™t deemed able to vote.

MP3, the file extension that revolutionised the music industry, is 30!

The audio codec that led to the rise of the iPod & Napster was created by a team at @fraunhofer.bsky.social IIS and named mp3 in July 1995 after an internal email poll.

The first song saved to mp3: Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner.

Kemi Badenoch: Argentinian president Javier Milei would be โ€˜templateโ€™ for my government Tory leader says she can fulfil same role as Milei, a far-right leader promising big cuts to public spending

One of those headlines that could only have appeared in the Onion a few years ago, now is apparently a genuine quote.

I really ought to ask for the part used bottle of screenwash to take away but I never do. But then they did a diagnostic job last week and said theyโ€™d rounded the labour charge down to an hour which more than paid for any number of bottles of screenwash.

Suella Braverman has unveiled her legal blueprint for how the UK could quit the European Convention on Human Rights
(ECHR) and accused Strasbourg of "judicial imperialism."
In a 56-page document, the former home secretary and attorney general says the UK should rewrite the 1998 Belfast Good Friday Agreement, stripping out ECHR references and replacing them with domestic UK and common law human rights principles.

Following Bravermanโ€™s lead, I am going to rewrite my mortgage contract with my bank, stripping out my obligation to pay interest or repay the loan, and replacing them with obligations on the the bank to pay for repairs on my home.

My wife worked at OME writing Pay Review Body. She and her team seemed to spend nearly as long proofreading the things (including content and writing style as well as typos) as writing them. Cons comms obvs being run by rank amateurs.

currencies were in the database's currency table with their fixed rates of exchange to the Euro so in some senses they probably still exist, in the same way that Spanish till receipts still showed Peseta amounts alongside โ‚ฌ for years after โ‚ฌ became an everyday thing. 2/2

The Nordic countries appear to lead the way in Europe as cashless societies, even for public toilets, which compensates for their hanging on to their various Krone. I worked on Euro implementation for major US bank's equities trading system years before โ‚ฌ came into use, all original โ‚ฌ countries' 1/2

Context plays a part: in my bit of Kent, Canterbury Cathedral doesnโ€™t need qualification by the city itโ€™s in, itโ€™s The Cathedral. I suspect the same applies in Salisbury, I have vague memories of just using โ€˜Theโ€™ when I lived there.

Oh dear, I said 'other' which applied when we were a MS when public education about EU was sparse at best. Zero at the moment as a state not even ready to be a candidate.

It's completely bizarre, a sort of wilful ignorance (or denial) on so many levels. I've given up on UK joining in my lifetime but every year seems to see a step backwards bc of 'making Brexit work' rather than educating population about benefits of membership unlike other member states. I despair.

13.07.2025 23:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Or even U.K. govts that appear to understand how the EU works, let alone how to negotiate with it as a Third Country rather than influence it as a Member State.

13.07.2025 21:15 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Not that that bothered a lot of UK citizens unless they wanted to become legally resident, hence the griping about being deprived of 'rights' by people who presumably wanted to remain under the radar as 'part time residents'.

90 continuous days is the threshold between just visiting and becoming legally resident in a lot of countries, the point when people have to register with the town hall and police. So 90/180 stops anyone overstepping that mark.

BBC South East have been obsessed with small boats since they became a Thing, with Simon Jones popping up at every opportunity to report on the โ€˜problemโ€™. Itโ€™s really fed the far right anger about immigrunts.

One other 7/7 thread today. Because I think how the bus network got running again is a real testament to some serious heroes that day:

The bus drivers and staff who got that network running again and got London home that night.

And TfL/the Mayor disobeyed the Security Services to make it happen /1

If you read the article youโ€™d see that the company holds vast amounts of data about every car, which youโ€™d think theyโ€™d release if it proved driver errors. That and the retractable door handles which make the cars v difficult to open after accidents donโ€™t fill me with confidence in the product.

That didnโ€™t stop large investment in Germany to maintain a post Brexit foothold in the EU. Cynical, given their pet project cut so many SMEs off at the knees whoโ€™d made trading across the SM a vital part of their business models.

Is this the kernel of the problem? Is it the unwillingness to acknowledge that Europe is a legitimate world actor. At this point, it's a hang-up

And is that reflex rejection what is actually stopping the UK moving towards Europe?

The history is interesting.
