I abstained on the Courts and Tribunals Bill yesterday. Not because I want the backlog to continue, but because restricting jury trials won't fix it, and removing the right of appeal will hit the poorest defendants hardest. There's good in this Bill. I want to see it improved, not defeated.
I spoke discussed my concerns regarding the government's plans to restrict trial by jury with @itvnews.bsky.social
As I said in the clip, what we call 'minor offences', for most people would have a major impact on their lives, and we cannot remove the right to be tried by a jury of our peers.

I spoke with @timesradio about my concerns with the government's plans around changes to Jury Trials. I'm clear, we need to look at other options to increase court sitting days, reduce delays in trials and free up time for judges, rather than restricting the right to trial by jury.
80 years since the Burnden Park disaster. 33 Bolton fans who never came home. I couldn't be at today's memorial, but I've shared the words I would have spoken.
"Remembrance is an act of love."

In Parliament, I highlighted the vital role of Commonwealth troops in the World Wars. Millions, including many Muslims, fought with Britain. Nearly 1.5 million Muslims died. In today's climate, where Muslims face demonization, remembering this history is crucial.
I'm proud to support #WorldObesityDay. In England, nearly 1 in 3 adults live with obesity, and 64.5% are overweight or obese, among the highest in Western Europe. Obesity profoundly impacts individuals, families, and the NHS. It's time to treat it with the seriousness it deserves.
Iran: we must not repeat the mistakes of Iraq and Libya.
Interventions sold as “necessary” have left devastation, instability, and refugee crises across the region.
In Parliament, I urged the Government not to drag the UK into another illegal war.
Amazing to help the wonderful Angeliki in Gorton and Denton yesterday, speaking to voters in Burnage. Lots of people choosing Labour and our message of unity, not division!
Residents have contacted me about various issues over the past few months, with over 700 emails received. Either seeking my views or requesting that I raise their concerns in Parliament and with ministers. I always welcome emails on any topic from constituents at qureshiy2@parliament.uk.
The front line is everywhere.
Democracy doesn’t just face threats abroad. Hostile states use online manipulation, cyber tools and money to distort debate and undermine trust, including here in the UK.
Why supporting democratic resilience overseas strengthens security at home ⬇️

Many in Bolton South and Walkden will begin Lent today, a time for reflection, prayer, and renewal. Lent encourages us to consider how we treat others and support those facing hardship. Warm wishes to all observing this day; may it bring peace, clarity, and strength.
As Ramadan begins, I’m wishing those observing a month of reflection, generosity and peace. At a time when Islamophobia is rising, solidarity matters more than ever. May this Ramadan strengthen our commitment to justice, compassion and serving others. 🌙✨
Wishing everyone celebrating a joyful Lunar New Year.
May the Year of the Fire Horse bring strength, energy and good fortune. Happy Lunar New Year.
We are taking long‑overdue steps to keep children safe online.
In Parliament, I called for full consultation with young people under 16 so their voices shape the new protections we need now, not years down the line.
Children deserve a safer digital world.

Zahawi is out of touch. I walk the streets of Manchester and London and it is not immigrants who make women afraid. His claim is misleading and scaremongering. Violence against women and girls is committed by men of all races and nationalities.
By taking the tough decisions to fix the foundations at the Budget, this Labour government is putting education first, by tripling investment in breakfast clubs, supporting teachers and improving school buildings.
I am delighted that the government has announced Cherry Tree Primary School as the next school in Bolton South and Walkden to introduce a free breakfast club, alongside Dukesgate Academy in Little Hulton, Kearsley West Primary School in Kearsley and Lever Edge Primary Academy in Great Lever.
For too long, cancer patients have waited too long for answers.
Under Labour’s National Cancer Plan, the NHS will meet cancer waiting time standards by 2029, with hundreds of thousands starting treatment within 62 days. £2.3bn for faster tests, saving lives.
This is real change
Really saddened to hear of the attack at a mosque in Islamabad.
My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those injured.
For over 30 years, Pakistan has faced the threat of terrorism and has endured some of the most devastating attacks on civilians and places of worship.
I will continue to press Ministers on these issues and return to this matter as soon as possible.

Road safety remains an issue of deep importance to me and to many families in Bolton South and Walkden. Below is the speech I was going to deliver, shaped by recent tragic events and by the experiences shared with me by constituents and community organisations.
I was due to speak in Parliament during the road safety debate this afternoon.
Unfortunately, due to a serious family emergency that required my immediate attention, I had to leave Westminster at short notice and was unable to be present in the Chamber.
I have joined MPs from across Parliament in calling for stronger AI regulation.
Recent cases show how AI can be misused to create sexualised imagery at scale. AI must be safe by design and comply with the law from day one.
A vital meeting of the APPG on Dentistry and Oral Health.
Alongside Mary Foy MP, I chaired a discussion with Stephen Kinnock MP and Chief Dental Officer Jason Wong on the crisis in NHS dentistry, from access to workforce pressures.
Patients cannot afford further delay.
I will be speaking in Parliament this Thursday in a debate on road safety.
Before then, I want to hear from residents:
- What changes would make our roads safer?
Specific hotspots or general ideas are welcome.
Your views will help shape the case I make on Thursday.
Pubs are at the heart of our communities, but landlords have faced years of rising costs and unfair rates.
The new support package is welcome: a 15% rates cut from 2026, a two‑year freeze, and wider reforms to help pubs
I’ll keep championing pubs across Bolton South and Walkden every step of the way
