Reminder that, as of the latest reports, Liam Ramos is still in prison in Texas - now for 5 days.

His parents are legal asylum seekers with no criminal record.

Welcome to the American Winter In the frozen streets of Minneapolis, something profound is happening.

Wrenching reporting on Minneapolis. This is a fascist government attacking its own people.

Following the killing of AFGE Member Alex Pretti and the subsequent slanderous rhetoric that followed from top Trump administration officials, AFGE National President Everett Kelley issued the following statement:

β€œYesterday, AFGE brought together labor and faith leaders from Minneapolis and across the nation to mourn our fallen brother from Local 3669, Alex Pretti. We honored his life and legacy and lifted up his family, his friends, his union, Minneapolis, and our nation in prayer.

β€œToday, we demand accountability.

β€œIn the immediate aftermath of Alex’s killing, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem betrayed the public trust by slandering the good name of our union brother and calling him a β€œdomestic terrorist.” Alex Pretti was a patriotic ICU nurse at a VA hospital who devoted his life to serving America’s veterans. That claim was reckless, defamatory, and unsupported by the facts. Noem was preceded in this false statement by Stephen Miller, Deputy White House Chief of Staff, who is also the architect of the chaotic and failed immigration policy in Minnesota.

β€œOur demand is clear: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was responsible for carrying out the policy that led to Alex’s needless killing, and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, the architect of that policy, must resign immediately. If they refuse, President Trump must dismiss them.

It’s hard to accurately describe what is happening in Minneapolis without sounding crazy.

Unmarked rental vans all over the city, with people in military gear and no id jumping out of them to take captive anyone who looks nonwhite or who makes political speech they disagree with.

E.P.A. to Stop Considering Lives Saved When Setting Rules on Air Pollution

The EPA is no longer going to consider how many potential lives a pollution regulation would save -- just the costs to industry. This is directly counter to EPA's mission. And it will kill Americans.

Who's Threatening Who? The Trump administration says immigration enforcement are being assaulted; the details tell a different story

Given news that ICE shot and killed an observer in Minneapolis, here is a pattern we've seen before:
*DHS say officers were under threat. This justifies to use deadly force.
*Subsequent reporting shows such claims simply don't hold up.

Emily Heller lives near 33rd and Portland and said she woke up to a commotion outside her home. She said she saw a car blocking traffic on Portland Avenue that appeared to be part of a protest against federal law enforcement operations.

Heller said she heard ICE agents telling the driver, a woman, to β€œget out of here.”

β€œShe was trying to turn around, and the ICE agent was in front of her car, and he pulled out a gun and put it right in β€” like, his midriff was on her bumper β€” and he reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face like three, four times,” Heller said.

Heller said it appeared the woman then accelerated and traveled about 100 feet before striking a utility pole and some other vehicles. She could be seen slumped over inside her car.

Absolutely horrific details about an ICE shooting in Minneapolis.

A witness says a woman was trying to drive away from an ICE operation and the ICE agent "reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face like three, four times."

ICE just murdered a woman here in Minneapolis. A legal observer. Shot her multiple times while she drove away as ordered. She was a US citizen.

Absolute, unequivocal, cold-blooded murder by Trump’s gestapo.

Abolish ICE, jail for everyone in charge. This is the lowest bar we accept now.

"Hard-to-abate" is sometimes code for "we haven't looked closely yet." This great new report shows opportunities for clean heat (low/medium-temp industrial process heat) through electrification, which also has public health benefits.

It’s the gold standard of US climate research. Contrarians could write the next one. Researchers who have downplayed the threat of global warming have been asked to author the next National Climate Assessment.

I look forward to the legally required, transparent peer review process required by the US Global Change Research Act and the Information Quality Act. I always thought they would try to do a NCA with Judith Curry, five old men and a LLM.

Opinion | Obama Supported It. The Left in Canada and Norway Does. Why Don’t Democrats?

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

Screenshot of Yglesias post reading: "Claim here from a green NGO guy is that I am a β€œcorporate shill” for believing that gas is cleaner than coal.

Does that make him a corporate shill for coal for arguing that I’m wrong? This is a childish way to argue. We simply disagree. Who is right?" that quote posts Aaron Regunberg post reading: "Matt Yglesias is a corporate shill. This is well attested. But he really took his hackery to the
next level in this essay for the Times. "Essay" is actually a very generous word to describe this blatant regurgitation of oil and gas industry talking points, which relies for its citations on sources like Energy In Depth, the Big Oil front group that the Times' own reporting has described as being directed by ExxonMobil. Essentially every line in this piece is wrong. And not like "I disagree with that opinion" wrongβ€”like empirically, demonstrably false, as you'd expect from the talking points of an industry that has spent decades lying about
these issues. Yglesias claims that natural gas "is much cleaner than coal"β€”it isn't, according to the Times, which reported that gas "can be just as harmful to the climate" unless the industry can
"all but eliminate the leaks that plague its use.""

Yglesias wants to take us backwards to the stale coal vs. natural gas fights of the 2000s that anchor the climate debate in fossil fuels. The debate must move forwards, beyond fossil fuels that corrupt our politics, drive inflation, harm public health, & foul our climate, air & water, public lands.

Screenshot from project 2025 that says By statute or regulation, CDC guidance must be prohibited from taking on a prescriptive character. For example, never again should CDC officials be allowed to say in their official capacity that school children "should be" masked or vaccinated (through a schedule or otherwise) or prohibited from learning in a school building.
Such decisions should be left to parents and medical providers. We have learned that when CDC says what people "should" do, it readily becomes a "must" backed by severe punishments, including criminal penalties. CDC should report on the risks and effectiveness of all infectious disease-mitigation measures dispassionately and leave the "should" and "must" policy calls to politically accountable parties.
Conflicts of Interest. There was a time when the CDC could not take money

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).
