I was delighted to see that prior to a showing of Blade Runner during the BFI's science fiction season, there were a number of origami unicorns placed on the seats by one of the BFI staff who is an origami fan. Still have mine somewhere.

I kid you not, they were playing the ICA in London, there were tickets available...and I'd had a heavy day at work, so decided to skip it and see them another time. They split up shortly afterwards.

*Epic* fail.

It's sadly not limited to more experimental music. After being excited to see Stevie Wonder for the first time (at an open air gig) and moving four times to get away from chattering @#&*s in the audience, we gave up and went home at the interval 😕

Again, I had no idea they'd ever done live gigs (I wasn't aware of them at all until a few years ago).

I do, somewhere - I moved recently and can't remember where this is, but I wouldn't have thrown it away!

Various - Resonance Radio Issue View credits, reviews, tracks and shop for the 1997 CD release of "Resonance Radio Issue" on Discogs.

They seemed to be very frustrated with the gig they did with Evan Parker, as there were some equipment issues - still, I thought it was a fascinating collaboration. A short extract was released on a CD included with the Resonance magazine in 1997:

I've seen them several times over the last 30 years, all of them in London I think, most recently in February. They were supporting Autechre a while back but I missed that. They did a fantastic show at the Corsica Studios in London in 2020 & another interesting one with Evan Parker many years ago.

I'm jealous, I hadn't realised he'd done any live shows before.

I had an interesting experience in a record shop recently, where a guy had put on a free jazz record (trombonist Paul Rutherford) because he liked the cover. The owner told him to ask me if he had any questions about it, as he knows what I like. The guy hated it and got quite hostile about it 😕

It was a bit of a shame not to see John Corbett's excellent little book given a nod here.

I took a friend and his brother to see Eugene Chadbourne many years ago - not exactly free jazz, although some of his set could certainly fit that category. The friend was amazed, his brother on the other hand was furious ☺️

I thought John Corbett's short but excellent "A Listener's Guide to Free Improvisation" might have received a mention in there. Definitely worth a read for anyone who wants to explore this music further.

I've never had the opportunity to use the phrase "it's something we wish we could uninvent", which I guess is probably a good thing.

Partner was at a talk last night chaired by journalist Lindsay Hilson, who opened the Q&A with something along the lines of "right, let's have some questions, and I want none of your 'this is more of a statement rather than a question' nonsense." 👍

That was genuinely disturbing, to the point it threw my attention out of the play.

There's a scene where everyone is watching Mundt (justifiably, Cauthery was superb) but I kept looking at the wordless Fiedler, and thought Philip Arditti was brilliant in his response.

I can make it through the film generally unscathed except for The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - Levon's performance reliably breaks me.
