I lost interest in pursuing a voiceover career years ago and would rather just help online creators find VAs for their content. Though I wonder if including “hobbyist” before “voice actor” in my bio would result in fewer opportunities for original projects?

Believe it or not, some VAs have actually turned down my offers to join my roster. I don’t understand why some wouldn’t want to list what they are or aren’t available for, but I respect their decisions regardless.

🧵Of course, there are career non-union VAs who couldn’t work in fandoms either because they only do paid VO or choose to avoid fanmade work, but the point is I want to remain available for fandom VOs as long as possible, and help other indie creators find others who do the same.

🧵I’m not saying any of this to diss my commenters who’d like to hear me officially work on their favorite games nor throw shade on the companies that make them, just that I enjoy helping fandoms bring their headcanons to life and don’t want to let that go by joining a union.

🧵That’s another reason why I made my voice actor roster, to show indie creators that I’m generally open to voluntary VO and fandom content in addition to every other willing participant listed who shares my preferences.

🧵The official VAs for these IPs are prohibited from taking part in fandom projects, especially if they’re part of trade unions, but non-union VAs within fandoms don’t have to deal with such restrictions if they don’t work on the same games or other mediums.

🧵When several video games only have written dialogue but no full voice acting, video game fans like to hear characters who are either limited to short phrases or effort sounds speak in full sentences like the aforementioned Super Mario games among others.

🧵Fandoms oftentimes create many engaging content with things that big studios usually would never do, including hypotheticals on what could’ve been, and other headcanons brought to life.

🧵If you’re a non-union voice actor who’s open to voluntary fanmade projects like I am, and you’re not under contracts that would prohibit you from voicing fanmade originals or parodies, you can basically voice whatever you want within reason, both for yourself and others!

🧵Whereas Kenny James has been under a contract disallowing him to say anything as Bowser other than Nintendo’s limited scripts for him, I as a YouTuber have voice acted all of Bowser’s written lines in the main Super Mario and Mario Party games.

🧵I’ve had viewers who heard my voice talents on YouTube, and then offered me roles for their fanmade videos on their channels, and I’d rather keep that going since indie creators have more creative control and freedom than those who work for big studios.

🧵It’s flattering when one thinks that I voice match someone so well that they’d like me to be an official successor to them (like Tony Jay for example). If I did that however, and joined a trade union, then I wouldn’t be allowed to voice for fanmade content anymore.
