This has been looming for a while but is still awful. Mass detention of the homeless in concentration camps happened in many countries in the interwar period, including Nazi Germany. The US tendency toward this was why I talked to @brian-goldstone.bsky.social in January, hoping to provide a warning.

I think it’s worth noting this piece generated the most unsubscribes I’ve seen in a while, and the newsletter version had the lowest open rate in many months. These horrors persist in part because too many people go to great pains to avoid them.

I'd suggest that threatening tenants who are *not* citizens is *more* concerning, for the obvious reason that citizens are generally less vulnerable so the threat has less power. But what's mind-boggling is that in the current environment, as the landlord lawyer knew, ICE might pick up citizens too.

Latino tenants sued their landlord. A lawyer told them they would be 'picked up by ICE.' When a Latino tenant filed a lawsuit against a landlord and real estate agent for selling the home she was evicted from, an opposing lawyer suggested she'll likely be deported by ICE before trial.

A Latino family in L.A. sued over an illegal eviction. The landlord's lawyer, Rod Fehlman, warned in an email that they'd "likely be picked up by ICE and deported prior to trial thanks to all the good work the Trump administration has done."

The kicker? Every member of the family is a U.S. citizen.

A hugely underdiscussed effect of the creeping fascism of ICE is that debt collectors and landlords are filing more cases against immigrants, even when they're inflated or outright falsified, because they know immigrants are too fearful of deportation to show up to court to fight them.
