One of the most common myths about sex work is that it only happens through cash-in-hand transactions.It’s true that some workers prefer cash, particularly for in-person services. But many, including online workers have to rely on digital financial systems. The discrimination sex workers experience from banks and payment processors contributes to the stigma that sex work is not legitimate. At the same time, the pressure to create a cashless society increases. If we can’t get paid digitally and no one carries cash to pay us, how can we earn our money?

Many sex workers would prefer the same banking options (like transfers and card payments) as anyone else. Relying on cash isn’t always about preference. It’s about sex worker survival. Cash supports worker anonymity and avoids bank surveillance but it comes with downsides. Sex workers struggle to retain anonymity using banking systems, like requiring full name disclosure for payID. Many payment processors require digital verification such as facial scanning. Cash earnings leave workers unable to prove income for loans and housing. Banking policies against porn flag sex worker income, often resulting in debanking.

De-banking and financial discrimination: explained. De-banking is the experience of having bank accounts refused, closed, frozen or questioned. It also includes cancelling EFTPOS or online payments. Banks are also known to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, migration, marriage, employment and income. This discrimination is because a person is considered “high risk” not because they have done anything illegal. I don’t want to download the [insert secure app] you’ve suggested. Can I just PayID you? Can’t you just get an EFTPOS machine?

Kinda ridiculous that this needs repeating, but: swers are one person BUSINESSES. Cancellations with less than 90 mins notice because you’re ’just not sure,’ is egregiously bad behaviour. ‘Keep the deposit’ is not generous if you cost someone a whole Saturday evening of work or play 🤬

Consent and relationships education saves lives ✌️

how quickly we went from age verification for pornography sites, to social media, to search engines. a reminder that, yet again, it is essential to listen to sex workers when they raise concerns about how technology is being tested on them.
