Eddie Muller also highlights how the film creates its own internal logic, allowing it to work brilliantly within its own terms. Muller also notes that the film is a touchstone for low-budget filmmaking due to the resourcefulness of its director, Edgar G. Ulmer, who made much out of very little.

#NoirAlley host Eddie Muller praised Detour (1945) for its effectiveness despite its "low rent ramshackle feel" and "minuscule budget," arguing that the film's unique style and unreliable narrator contribute to a dreamlike nightmare quality rather than diminish its impact.
