MH-COST takes a psycho-social approach to understanding how factors like gender, education & occupation shape wellbeing and belonging among young people from the Pakistani Bengali community who experience issues with documentation. 🔗 wellcome.org/research-fun...

Delighted to announce the launch of my new
@wellcometrust.bsky.social project: The Mental Health Costs of Statelessness (MH-COST). In partnership with Imkaan Welfare Organisation, I'll explore how lack of documentation & exclusion affects the mental health of adolescents & young adults in Pakistan.
This is our first paper from the UCL-LUMS Partition of Identity Project exploring the lives of the Pakistani Bengali community in Pakistan. We are deeply grateful to those who generously gave up their time to take part in the study. We hope we have done their accounts justice 🙏🏽 poistudy.com
Drawing on 85 oral history interviews, we introduce the concept of suspended identity to describe the impermanence and precarity of citizenship status that defines life for many Pakistani Bengalis, resulting in deep, intergenerational consequences for an already marginalised community
In the article we explore how historical conflict, state-security frameworks, and racialised assumptions continue to shape citizenship policy and practice for Pakistani Bengalis in Karachi. Despite being 3rd & 4th generation residents, many continue to face challenges around citizenship.
Our new article is out now in #CitizenshipStudies - 'Suspended identity: statelessness, citizenship challenges and the impermanence of identity status faced by Pakistani Bengalis.'
