Scenes from Marie Hirel's PhD on her doctoral hat: The Strasbourg Munster, Flammkuchen, Pretzel, a monkey playing basketball, the targets used for training the monkeys, and Marie's favorite subject Nereis wearing the crown for being the best subject
The final candidate from our lab this year was Marie Hirel, who defended her thesis on social evaluation and partner choice in Tonkean macaques. She was supervised by Steffi Keupp and worked at the Strasbourg primate center. S

Lisa's doctoral hat with a small tree of "monkey oranges" (Strychnos spines), camera traps, predators, and a baboon riding a bicycle (Lisa's favorite past time).
Last week, Lisa Ohrndorf defended her thesis on the Movement Ecology of wild Guinea baboons with an excellent presentation. She combined phenology data, camera trap data and GPS waypoints to see in which way food availability and predator presence affected the fission-fusion dynamics of the baboons

William O'Hearn with doctoral hat after his successful defense
The artwork decorating Will's hat, including the food box, a playmobile figure with beard, depicting Will, Will's hut in our field camp CRP Simenti, with a small Will waving out of the hut, the wall by the river where beer was enjoyed, and Will's phantasy of a giant crocodile devouring one very annoying baboon who kept disrupting the field experiments
Next came William O'Hearn, also known as "Will" - he gave a superb presentation of his work on the attribution of competence in wild Guinea baboons, using a combination of field experimentation and analyses of long-term data on meat-sharing.Wil
