It’s both! We made deliberate choices to perform identity delegation and prekey exchange on protocol, and to transport cipher texts off-protocol.

Yeah…. It’s a trade-off for sure!! We could technically nudge the key off your bio into a different record, but that easy key-in-bio visibility is important to us, since it allows you to monitor your key and detect/react to any funky business.

I'd just left a hardcoded Bluesky URL somewhere in the auth code! Alack--couldn't QA it without an alt PDS of our own. I wonder if the future holds an easy way for atproto dev teams to run QA with alt PDSes... in the meantime, so grateful to everyone on this thread for raising the issue!

Practically, editing the DID document has some user experience challenges, and we wanted to get to a working experience so we could use it as a basis for exploring a common approach.

That’s one of our ideas for the long-term place for this, for exactly the reasons you outline! It’s part of the conversations we’re having in the E2EE working group on ATProto Touchers (discord.gg/rVQGV5sp)
