Like thinking about Void here and the other bots really made me realize that the degree to which the use of llms is mostly a thing without context or awareness that conversation happens within a community

It's really weird to have a technology that's so fundamentally predicated on social interactions that is used in such an isolated and isolating way.

I was joking this weekend about using AI to create a bunch of Weekend at Bernie's images for a hypothetical funeral photo reel, and I really shouldn't have been holding this monkey's paw when I said it.

Ha I mean, you should see what OIDC support looks like for Overleaf, if they have a way to authenticate w/ OIDC, then @ngerakines.me's AIP lib that he wrote for Graze might make it possible just to stand it up and log in w/ an ATProto account!

They're also really mad at people who have any feelings about them that aren't adoration, and so love ranting about cancel culture and a lack of positivity.

It's a topic that has come up in the #indiesky meetups! Initially within the context of academic publishing and storage of data.

This whole project was like a gigantic gnarly data cleaning problem requiring a lot of local context and meant that the project leads were wrangling competing newsrooms (and reporters) from across the state in a bunch of different types of institutions (academics, for profit & non-profit news, etc)

Oh heck yeah, a project I helped get off the ground a bunch of years ago finally launched!

tl;dr: In 2018 California changed its laws so that police disciplinary files were public records. It finally provided a window into repeated misconduct by officers some of whom moved from agency to agency.

2019 – 2024 – Repeated denials and discovery stonewalling Through years of communications with the police, the plaintiffs and the court through the investigation and later the discovery process for the lawsuit, Tesla never mentioned that it had all the data that explained how Autopilot saw the crash, which everyone was seeking, sitting on its servers for years. The facts are: Tesla had the data on its servers within minutes of the crash When the police sought the data, Tesla redirected them toward other data When the police sought Tesla’s help in extracting it from the computer, Tesla falsely claimed it was “corrupted” Tesla invented an “auto-delete” feature that didn’t exist to try explain why it couldn’t originally find the data in the computer When the plaintiffs asked for the data, Tesla said that it didn’t exist Tesla only admitted to the existence of the data once presented with forensic evidence that it was created and transfered to its servers.

This whole story is insane. Tesla apparently did everything it could to avoid providing the data it had about its Autopilot crash. This is just a snippet and there's a lot more. electrek.co/2025/08/04/t...

The expensive "Is this really decentralized?" parts like constructing an actual app of stuff, that's apart from doing identity verification. BUT!! The identities are still mostly served by Bluesky. As is the directory for identities! And so I think your take is current enough, toh. I think the latest Blacksky / censorship issues have led to conversations between people that are taking the distributed plc directory thing more seriously, but it's literally just chatter - no actual motion that l'm aware of

We can update folks on updates about how ATProto is independent & growing but this will keep happening.

There's a corollary to this, which is that the industry needs fast and convenient ways to onboard new users. Every year we have more young people or people paying attention for the first time. Establishing one's credibility is a super important skill!

Yeah definitely. This is at least vaguely home lab shaped, the q is how consumer grade can it get. I think it could get there!

And how much feature extraction you're doing server side and exposing about posts. It vaguely reminds me of some of the set matching stuff that Google was trying to propose in privacy sandbox to do ads

I guess the q is relative to say the amount of data you gotta steam and store to watch Netflix on a device

This aligns strongly with my expectations. AI devices will become cheaper, & what we need to be talking about is how we mediate our relationships w/ each other and w/ technology.

So much of what will come next will ride on the backs of cultural forces, and finding patterns which we adopt together.
