When you build a machine to target people based on gender, race, or any other identity, it ends up targeting Jews too.
New deposition testimony shows a DOGE staffer flagged a Holocaust documentary—about Jewish women forced into slave labor by the Nazis—for termination.
His reason is shocking.

This column from @willbunch.bsky.social demands Americans look at the cost of our dehumanizing, violence fetishizing government’s war of choice. The youngest of these girls is just a bit older than my oldest; the tiny hands in the rubble should haunt and galvanize us all.
Yes! So well put. This is what I love about academia. It’s a rare sphere where good work is the mission, enabled by a community of peers who volunteer to advance that mission.
There’s a weird assumption in academic AI discussions that we’re in the business of producing articles, and if a machine can produce APSRs faster, we’ll go broke. But…that’s not how the economics of higher ed works! Tuition and grants pay the bills, not selling articles. And as long as those exist…
This interview is essential helpful for understanding the stakes and potential outcomes of the accelerating oligarchic capture of US media. My first experience as a grad student was visiting the CEU (RIP) in Budapest in 2010 and everyone knew even then that media capture was central to Orban plan.
@karlbode.com's new newsletter is a must-read for any one who wants to keep up on the politics and democratic implications of media and tech policy. He is one of the very best journalists on the beat and he deserves our support!
If you are just waking up here on the East Coast of N. America, here's where you can catch up on the news re: the US-Israel attack on Iran.
The US and Israel are bombing Iran. Anyone reporting it as “preventive” is engaging in propaganda, by definition. There is no interpretation of what’s happening as anything else than a crime.
You don’t have to like the Iranian regime to understand why this is bad.
"Antiseptic judicial rhetoric cannot do justice to what is happening"
The opinion, by a Clinton appointee, says Trump admin's conduct is "beyond the reach of ordinary legal description. It is an assault on the constitutional order."

We deserve leaders who speak the truth. Happy Presidents’ Day.
The snake eating its own tail effect of AI agents isn’t so much a problem of training data model collapse as the collapse of the social epistemic foundations by which human sense-making can be carried out at all—and which AI agents *also* rely on for whatever facsimile of sense-making they conduct.
Hundreds of millions spent on human misery
A fantastic breakdown explaining why "authenticity" and "relatability" discourse gives me the creeps. Succinct and razor sharp in its composition. Just in time for my Intro to Media Studies unit on media industries...
Bringing the critics’ Rotten Tomatoes score up from a 4 to an 11 is this somehow-not-a-satire review from the Epoch Times.
Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich
A lot going on here. Watch the video first, then read MPR's account of what happened. The driver passes into a space where there is no law or accountability, but then out again when local police show up. Later on the police say they did NOT intervene. (OK officer...)

The NH legislature is advancing regressive bills mandating curriculum and allowing firearms on campus, and prohibiting Chinese nationals from enrolling in public colleges and universities. The latter exceeds even the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) in its defamatory racism. Hate out of Higher Ed.
A useful visual tool to help teach about rhetorical tactics of mis- and disinformation used to pollute the public sphere and keep the public from understanding what’s happening and acting on it.
Headlines matter
@financialtimes.com is clear

So important. What they say is not the story. That is never the story. What happened is the story. Write what happened.
Wer AfD wählt, stimmt für eine neue deutsche SA nach ICE-Vorbild und „Remigration“ mit „wohltemperierter Grausamkeit“ (Höcke). Vulgo: Menschenjagd.
Public media is bruised but not beaten. Minnesota Public Radio is doing a great job with live coverage. Streaming here:
Legacy news is catastrophically failing to meet the moment.
The way to reconcile this is their aspiration was always to put down a slave revolt, not fight in one. bsky.app/profile/osit...
One court decision, two different headlines.
Guardian on the left, NY Times on the right. Which one more directly conveys information and the stakes to the reader?
That’s what meeting the moment looks like! So happy for UVA.
Yes to all of this, except I’m not so keen on their anti-immigration and anti-Muslim “ghetto laws” either, so if they could just keep those to themselves (or better yet abolish them), this could be a very interesting proposal.
You may also remember Lewiston as the site of a mass shooting at a Bowling alley in 2023. Here's a piece from my colleague Jaed Coffin with a portrait of Lewiston, post shooting, through the eyes of an immigrant family.
