I kept telling him reading is like a super power. Unlocks the world. But it wasn’t until he had interests that drove him to embrace that power that he dove in.

I’m certain not every parent agrees with this, but it’s worked wonders for us: let the kid lead. Let them pursue what interests them, at their pace. We coached our oldest on reading and encouraged it but didn’t press it. HE finally wanted to really read at 7-8, and then it was off to the races.
