βOur Homes Weigh a Tonne (of carbon per square metre)
Before a single appliance is switched on, an average all-electric Australian home has already emitted more than seven times the carbon it will produce over its operational lifetime.β

As Iβm fond of saying, we can always change operating emissions once it opens, we can never change upfront carbon once itβs built.

This week the Let Me Sum Up podcast sums up the climate and energy measures in the 2025-26 Federal Budget β admittedly slim pickings, leaving ample opportunity for @frankiemuskovic.bsky.social, @tennantreed.bsky.social and I to play armchair Treasurer!

Puff piece on @abc-news.bsky.social #abc730 program tonight about possible future gas shortage in Victoria was an overt attempt to peddle the gas industryβs βdrill, baby drillβ agenda.
We donβt have a gas shortageβ¦just a shortage of political constraints on unfettered gas exports

02.12.2024 03:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Addressing end of life emissions from a building at end of life today is not module C. It is different to addressing end of life emissions of a new building in 60 years (that is module C). Addressing the building at end of life today also is upfront carbon.

I now realise I have shared too many resources :)
Didnβt even get to the circular economy ones, like the below:

Five years later we did a review of the topic again, this time in a world that really thought of nature as critical, with TNFD and the Kunming-Montreal Buodoversity Protocol shaping up. This report made us decide to develop a Nature Roadmap.

Another batch, this time on nature. Two resources, with the first a review on what we needed to do to make the built environment more nature-friendly and biodiverse as we thought nature would become an issue of investable concern.

When we redeveloped Green Star, we wanted to move away from a narrow view of resilience to one that encompassed community and social resilience, so we put out a nice primer on why we did what we did :)

Very excited to be consulting on Green Star Futouts, the first rating tool in our system to put a circular economy as our key driver. Look forward to hearing what people think.

Direct/indirect is why. 37% of total global emissions are buildings (UNEP): 11% from upfront carbon, 26% from energy emissions. Of the 26%, 30% (6% as in graph) are direct emissions (gas, diesel, etc.), with rest indirect grid emissions attributed to buildings, included in the βpowerβ sector.
