Immersing myself in Spiritual Jazz 18, 4 LPs, tracks from Estonia, Azerbaijan, GDR, etc. Behind the Iron Curtain vols. 1 and 2 (Jazzman, 2025). "The history of jazz in the USSR is inherently complex and contradictory ..." As is listening to it in 2025. I recommend it & the liner notes that come with

Marie de la Nuit, TransportΓ©es (Permanent Draft, 2025, despite what (c) says on back of LP). Worth reading the notes (see other pics)

Picked this out-of-control EP up from Sublime Frequencies' HM at the 4th Annual Record Hawk Show last October. The Smashchords, s/t (Smashtrade Records, 1981). Ripping some tracks for this week's guitar-forward episode ...
02.12.2025 02:03 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ripping this killer live LP by Argentina's Los Violadores for this week's show. LOVE LOVE LOVE this record & grateful for Federico GΓ³mez Levitanas's essay at shit-fi.com/articles/Los..., which includes link to a translation of the band's manifesto of sorts. A @wfmu.bsky.social Record Fair score!
02.12.2025 01:02 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Stopped in to Academy Records Annex to pick up some home-taped Arabic cassettes Cory alerted me to, and wound up also finding this personal grail: Original Wings, Change This World (EMI, 1979), feat. all-timer Igba Alusi youtu.be/2hC1HI0deuw?...

Ripping some of my favorite & rarest Sabah tracks for next week's show. This is the soundtrack for Lahn Hobbi (El Ahram, date unknown). Sabah's range never ceases to amaze me. Killer tracks from her on this and the soundtrack for Afrah El-Chabab, which I'll be ripping in a moment

First time hearing this Moroccan powerhouse. Aziza Galal, Ila Awel Mattabeuna (Sout El Hob, 1976), her debut LP. Holy crap, it's amazing. Discogs only lists 13 records, she retired at 26 in the mid-1980s. Ripping the whole damn record for you kids who'll be listening in Wednesday
11.11.2025 01:42 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ripping a track from this personal grail for next week's show. Les FrΓ¨res MΓ©gri, Mahmoud Hassan YounΓ¨s (OG Philips, 1973). A terrific Moroccan LP that doesn't really quite sound like any other
11.11.2025 00:52 β π 20 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0First listen. Caetano Veloso, Transa (OG Philips, 1972, trifold). "Walk down Portobello Road to the sound of reggae ..." "You look completely different from those straights who walked around on the moon". Perfect dreary light rain gray-blue-silver sky gnawing sadness music
09.11.2025 20:04 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1Finally found a good listenable copy of Os Mutantes' s/t first LP (Polyfar, 1986 RE of Polydor 1968 OG). I dunno how Brazilians feel about this album at this late date, but I've always loved it & am loving it even more out of real (small) speakers. I almost forgot they do "Baby"!
09.11.2025 19:28 β π 21 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Found one of my all-time grails at the @wfmu.bsky.social Record Fair today: A 1st mono of TropicΓ‘lia Ou Panis Et Circencis (Philips, 1968), one of my favorite compilations ever, first time hearing this music on something other than a computer

I have NOT listened to this exhilarating historic LP nearly enough. Aunt Sally, s/t (2022 Mesh-Key RE + 7" of 1978 concert; OG 1977 Vanity Records). Ripping this and records by several other artists for an all J-women punk-related episode for this coming Wednesday. Totally great!

I have love love LOVED this album for years but finally got it on vinyl. Early all-women Japanese post-punk band Mizutama Shobodan's The Maiden's Prayer Is Dada-Da-Da! (Spittle 2025 RE of Kinniku-Bijo 1981 OG). Ripping it now for an upcoming show

14.09.2025 16:12 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The first listen to MIA, Kala (XL 2021 RE of 2007 OG), I was a bit disappointed. Pulled it out tonight prompted by a Twitter mutual's enthusiasm & am loving it. A reminder that "best music" takes may be not really so much right or wrong but a potential gift if they nudge you to listen again
12.09.2025 03:11 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Wowza. Finally getting around to this notoriousness. The Beach Boys, The Smile Sessions (Capitol, 2025 RE of 2011 OG). Almost bought a bootleg CD attempt to create the album in the late 90s on the street near Columbia University but was flat broke those days & maybe knew I'd eventually get 2 hear it

SOUND ON: Another grail, Yao Su Rong's Love Is Forever (Crown Records, 1971). Granted, she released a dozen other LPs in 1971 alone (and a whopping 40 LPs in 1970), but, yes, this is the one I've always wanted.
09.09.2025 21:22 β π 11 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0SOUND ON: One of my favorite compilations of all time just got updated and reissued. Ryukyu Rare Groove REVISITED | Okinawa Pops 1957-1978 (Nipponophone 2025). Love love love this music so much. Tears!
