One data centre or one million homes? Mapping Ontario's proposed hyperscaler boom Canada’s National Observer found and drew from multiple sources to put together a map of planned data centres in Ontario, and found at least 15 projects with a combined capacity of 2,202 MW currently ...

New story out from @cloelogan.bsky.social and me. Data centres are being planned across Ontario, with some using the same amount of electricity as 700,000 homes. Where are they? And why are communities being left in the dark?

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

I've been saying it a lot, but these deaths line up with what happened in early concentration camps during other regimes: Deaths from poor conditions, disease, or abuse. These deaths are not accidental. They are the direct result of a camp system that is designed to harm those being imprisoned.

Why are people always yelling at The Left, a group almost entirely shut out of public life, including mainstream news outlets. You are mad at people on social media. Get a life

it’s really important to have publications like People covering this because it’s going to get seen by so many people who don’t consume political media

Abysmal statement from Canada on the illegal US action in Venezuela.

It doesn’t matter how much you dislike Maduro, that doesn’t justify a violation of international law and the UN Charter. You can’t call on “all parties” to respect international law and not call out US lawlessness.

Just a general reminder that your experience on any social media app depends a lot on what *you* make of it. It is easy to find some annoying people on any platform. But platforms like Bluesky also give *you* way more power to control your own experience and to fix whatever annoys you.

Today the 3rd Circuit Court ordered the @post-gazette.com to restore our contract it illegally tore up 5 years ago. That’s our health care, PTO, right to a 40-hr. work week, short-term disability and so much more we’ve struck for 3+ years.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

The CBS takeover by Larry Ellison and Bari Weiss is the most foreboding move in a while, and I’m not saying that lightly.

It will have an effect on the 2026 elections: CBS will now lie to people and normies will believe it.

This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

Just so I'm clear:

TV host says we should kill every homeless person? No big deal

TV host says the right must "go to war" with the left? Pfft.

TV host says the government is cracking down on critics? Well, the government cracks down on him for the criticism.

Free speech, everyone.

Having proper ventilation and filtration of all indoor air spaces would mitigate symptom-free spread. So many good reasons for the govt to have a national grant/subsidy program to clean indoor air in every home, office, commercial, industrial building. What a missed nation-building opportunity!

Ford government declines to say if temporary foreign worker program should end | Globalnews.ca Premier Doug Ford's office declined to take a position on whether or not the temporary foreign worker program should come to an end amidst growing unemployment in his province.

Young Ontarians are disillusioned by sky high cost-of-living, housing insecurity and rampant unemployment.

Doug Ford’s message to them?

You’re not looking “hard enough”.

For someone with so much contempt for education, he sure lectures a lot.

Milton still doesn’t have all-day, two-way GO train service. What’s the hold up? “A complex challenge,” says Metrolinx.

A bit of a small explosive allegation here. The federal government was prepared to give the province $1 billion for 2-way all-day service to Milton. But while Doug Ford said he was “1,000 per cent committed” to making it happen, Metrolinx has pointed the finger at CPKC. #onpoli
