Instead, the Bill falls short. Taken with the narrow Rycroft Review - just three months long and excluding Brexit entirely - it represents yet another failure to confront the realities of the threat we face.

There was a clear expectation that the Representation of the People Bill would address how we defend democracy in an age of hybrid, digital and cognitive warfare.

Many hoped it would meaningfully strengthen our protections against foreign interference.
