Let’s call this an experiment of sorts. I’ve long wanted to launch a Proper Newsletterβ„’β€”and rather than coming out the gate hot, I’m giving myself the space to grow into it.Β

I have two recommendations for you this month. But first, some updates.

Lots of supposed liberals/leftists have insisted that trans people stop fighting for our rights because "kitchen table issues" or whatever.

What we're seeing in Kansas right now is the natural outcome of you throwing us under the bus.

Fix your hearts.

what's not to love about dark academia, obsession, possession, gothic horror, vague terror, isolation, and unease? All these books share one or more of these themes, with Jewish main characters navigating them all.

I haven't watched it, maybe because I was afraid it would mess with my memory of the book. Reading this (and one of the linked interviews) actually makes me less afraid of that now.

fwiw, I feel like you do the equivalent of this frog scene in NECESSITY very well, one of the things that drew me in.

Set in an alternate present superhero India where the history of the world has gone in a verrryyy different direction. Come for the archaeology, stay for the great, complex portrayal of a relationship.

No Such Thing As Duty - Lara Elena Donnelly (Neon Hemlock)

Sad Somerset Maugham and sexy vampire? Yeah, you heard me.

Unsurprisingly, it's a book very much exploring one's relationship with duty, but also the prose is chef's kiss and the character work delicious. Absolute gold from the get-go.

Slightly torturous to not vote for the stuff that we put out, but also glad to have that policy to give us free rein to hype up the books we read and loved this year from other folks.
