Writers & Books Artistic Director and author Tyler Barton reads into a mic at a podium with a quilted book-patterned podium cover. A red curtain and string lights set the stage. David DeGraff, Cassandra Scherr, Jennifer Hudak, and I are seated to the left.
Three booksโWe're Here: The Best Speculative Fiction of the Year, ECO24: The Year's Best Speculative Ecofiction, and Tell Me Yours, I'll Tell You Mine sit face-out on a counter with stacks of books between them. Behind the counter, between windows, is a red poster that reads: Eat, Sleep, Read, Local.
I'm holding a copy of ECO24: The Year's Best Speculative Ecofiction in front of a bookshelf. The anthology's cover is black with an otherworldly pink blooming plant.
Had a really lovely time at yesterday's Speculative Fiction Salon at Writers & Books with local legends @jenniferhudak.bsky.social, @daviddegraff.bsky.social, and Cassandra Scherr! Thanks for packing the house for speculative queer and eco fiction. @neonhemlock.bsky.social @apexmag.bsky.social

If youโre a member of SFWA, itโs your last chance to nominate works for the Nebula Awards!
Suggesting my own work for the last time for the Nebulas!
A book shelf with A NECESSARY CHAOS by Brent Lambert, plus COUNTESS and SKIN THIEF by Suzan Palumbo.
saw your books at Little District the other dayโฆ.because of how their shelves were organized you were accidental neighbors with @brentclambert.bsky.social

Letโs call this an experiment of sorts. Iโve long wanted to launch a Proper Newsletterโขโand rather than coming out the gate hot, Iโm giving myself the space to grow into it.ย
I have two recommendations for you this month. But first, some updates.

Lots of supposed liberals/leftists have insisted that trans people stop fighting for our rights because "kitchen table issues" or whatever.
What we're seeing in Kansas right now is the natural outcome of you throwing us under the bus.
Fix your hearts.
what's not to love about dark academia, obsession, possession, gothic horror, vague terror, isolation, and unease? All these books share one or more of these themes, with Jewish main characters navigating them all.
Lovely to see UNCOMMON CHARM by @anoteinpink.bsky.social & @eudaemaniacal.bsky.social on this staff list at Pima County Public Library.

I haven't watched it, maybe because I was afraid it would mess with my memory of the book. Reading this (and one of the linked interviews) actually makes me less afraid of that now.
fwiw, I feel like you do the equivalent of this frog scene in NECESSITY very well, one of the things that drew me in.
ha this is messed up

The Iron Below Remembers by Sharang Biswas (Neon Hemlock)
Set in an alternate present superhero India where the history of the world has gone in a verrryyy different direction. Come for the archaeology, stay for the great, complex portrayal of a relationship.
No Such Thing As Duty - Lara Elena Donnelly (Neon Hemlock)
Sad Somerset Maugham and sexy vampire? Yeah, you heard me.
Unsurprisingly, it's a book very much exploring one's relationship with duty, but also the prose is chef's kiss and the character work delicious. Absolute gold from the get-go.
Watched Sirฤt today...what a brutal, bleak film. Couldn't stop clenching my jaw for the entire last half.

Just sent in my personal Nebula ballot.... ๐
Slightly torturous to not vote for the stuff that we put out, but also glad to have that policy to give us free rein to hype up the books we read and loved this year from other folks.
Woot! My (debut) novella THE IRON BELOW REMEMBERS (from @neonhemlock.bsky.social) is on Nerds of a Feather's list of awards recommendations!

If you're voting for any of the sci-fi, fantasy, or other speculative fiction awards, do consider some of my work from last year!
I'm pretty sure voting is still open for the Nebulas, the Hugos, the Locus awards, the BSFA awards, and more!
First chance to join Club Serpentine 2026 and get ALL THE NEON HEMLOCK BOOKS FOR THE YEAR!!!!
