I have many ideas.

I am not sure if it is right to say all existing models have failed - some have done far better than others.

We can learn from many things, but must also exercise healthy caution.

We do need a transformation, but one that is mindful of excess and pitfalls.

Right to buy in England โ€˜fuelled housing crisis and cost taxpayers ยฃ200bnโ€™ Common Wealth report calls discounted sales of council homes one of the โ€˜largest giveaways in UK historyโ€™

Margaret Thatcherโ€™s sale of 1.9m council homes cost public purse ยฃ200bn. Tories bought votes.

Policy fuelled shortages in social housing, turbocharged inequality.

One in six private tenants in England now rents a former local authority home.

Councils lack resources to build new homes.

The US attacks on Iran have backfired horribly โ€“ but a path to peace is still possible | Simon Tisdall Executions by a vengeful regime in Tehran are soaring. The west must pursue a different strategy, says Guardian foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall

What did the US/Israeli attacks on Iran achieve?

They killed around 1000 civilians, injured around 5000 more.

Obviously failed to stop Iran's nuclear programme (it can't be stopped by force) and failed to achieve regime change.

2/2) Countries like Vietnam are playing this wisely.

If anything, the thing which is most creating issues here is the US military presence.

China is a great power and is going to exert significant pull over its near-abroad, including the oceans.

Unstoppable fact.

1/2) The West assumes that, should China come to dominate the seas around it, that would be geopolitically a bad outcome.

Historically, one power coming to dominance creates a great peace.

China has also been a naval power before, in the Yuan, controlling Sakhalin to the strait of Hormuz.

This is especially so if regulations end up being created at EU level - we have seen how the Brussels effect forces mega-US tech companies to change.

Establish measures in UK law, push the EU in that direction too - and you will regulate unsavoury aspects of the internet.

Edwin, I havenโ€™t deliberately missed any point - you just havenโ€™t got the killer argument you think you have.

Many countries impose regulations on the internet - and there is no reason why a human creation cannot be otherwise.

We created it, it didnโ€™t exist until recently, it can be changed.

Brexit is the most absurd hill for Labour to die on, and yet there's no doubt that they're dying, as recent poll numbers prove.

It is stark staring mad that their approach to Brexit continues to be "slightly improve the lifeboats on the Titanic".

Understood, but I think what this conversation has shown is that the supposed knockdown arguments against the Online Safety Act are far from that.

There are plausible arguments in favour of the bill, and its shortcomings require further regulation - not total deregulation.

How is paywalling impossible? As I said, would be imperfect, would undoubtedly be things through the cracks etc - but its all about limiting exposure.

"global internet" (or rather, virtually unregulated status quo) isn't a fact of nature, it is our creation - it can be changed.

2/2) Some of these alternatives are for big dietary changes - eg: legumes, peanuts, some seeds (eg: pumpkin/hemp) etc.

Some of them are for smaller things.

Think soy sauce.

When Vietnamese talk about soy sauce, they actually mean Maggi - which is a hydolysed wheat protein sauce - not soy.

1/2) Soy is often thrown at vegetarians/vegans as being bad for the environment.

Around 85% of soy produced around the world is used for animal feed.

If you were to only use soy for humans, I suspect you would need a hell of a lot of soy.

Also the case that there are alternatives to soy.

1) Make it so that all online porn is paywalled. Sure, some kids will steal debit cards or whatever. But most wont.

2) Censor all other sources of porn online other than porn sites. Could especially be done by a big market actor like the EU. Kills the Google option.

Maybe there are other options.

Much of society is organised around partial 'solutions', because human life is complicated.

Does seem valuable to me to slightly inconvenience adults who want to watch porn, if that would stop at least some children in their tracks.

I can give you perhaps some other ideas - again none perfect.
