Ms Sophie-Anna Dann discussing results of research on the neonatal jaundice pathway - 1) jaundice suspected on visual examination; 2) TcB testing of suspected hyperbilirubinaemia; 3) SBr testing of suspected hyperbilirubinaemia; 4) laboratory analysis of SBr samples; 5) re-admission of infants with hyperbilirubinaemia requiring treatment. Dr Claire Burton talking about the qualitative studies that form part of the work packages - semi-structured in-depth primary care clinician interviews; and semi-structured in-depth interviews with patients, secondary care clinicians and commissioners. Dr Paul Campbell talking about the rising incidence in dementia and potential reasons for this rise: a shifting problem, better detection rates, a rising population age.

Throughout the afternoon we have heard about research looking at the pathway for jaundice in newborns (Ms Sophie-Anna Dann); the use of advice and guidance referrals in primary care [BADGER] (Dr Claire Burton); and dementia and social care research (Dr Paul Campbell).

Paul Bird presenting in front of a slide entitled 'The Joys of Variation' with an example of a statistical process control chart.

Paul Bird discusses how NHS hospitals are increasingly using Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts to improve decision-making and healthcare outcomes. SPC charts help distinguish between normal variations in hospital data and significant changes that might need attention.

Prof Amy Grove talking in front of a slide showing the groups impacted by trial results not being implemented - patients and the public, surgeons & surgical teams, research funders, and academics.

Next up, Prof Amy Grove looks at uptake of evidence from surgical trials. Large numbers of trials do not lead to practice change, which impacts many groups. Building trials with implementation in mind, not in isolation, can hopefully maximise their adoption.
