Throughout the afternoon we have heard about research looking at the pathway for jaundice in newborns (Ms Sophie-Anna Dann); the use of advice and guidance referrals in primary care [BADGER] (Dr Claire Burton); and dementia and social care research (Dr Paul Campbell).
Our afternoon session begins with Prof Graeme Currie discussing knowledge brokering with Dr Christine Burt (Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust) and Dr Lina Martino (Sandwell Council).
Following this Prof Sophie Staniszewska talked about the PIPER / 'Research into Reality' toolkit, which includes a work package looking at creating the right environment to support PPIE in implementation.
Over the lifetime of ARC WM we have hosted 394 #PPIE events and 99 training events, as discussed by Dr Magdalena Skrybant. Thank you to our 18 public contributors who were part of our core PPIE group.
Paul Bird discusses how NHS hospitals are increasingly using Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts to improve decision-making and healthcare outcomes. SPC charts help distinguish between normal variations in hospital data and significant changes that might need attention.
Next up, Prof Amy Grove looks at uptake of evidence from surgical trials. Large numbers of trials do not lead to practice change, which impacts many groups. Building trials with implementation in mind, not in isolation, can hopefully maximise their adoption.
Thanks to Prof Domenico Giacco who talked about work being carried out to improve both the mental and social health of young people through initiatives such as lunch-chat to help socialising with gamification/group activities.
Our first presentation is from Dr Ciara Harris and Prof Samuel Watson sharing their research into integrated care services, such as virtual wards / hospital-at-home. Feedback from patients, carers and staff has been positive, but with ideas for improvements.
Our Director, Prof Richard Lilford, is kicking off our NIHR ARC West Midlands celebration event here in Birmingham, sharing the many impacts our researchers and public contributors have made in various aspects of healthcare.
Happy New Year from all the NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs) across the country!
