It's an individual style thing. Unless someone is paying you to work to a deadline, why not have some random flings with Research? It can be quite enjoyable, and there's even a small chance it will make your writing better. As long as you know where your heart truly lies.

I agree. iCloud is fine if you use it correctly. I did have trouble with Dropbox once, so I kicked it to the curb. The best overall strategy is β€˜do everything.’ Use recovery specialists when needed. Use iCloud always. Do nightly backups to an external network drive. Etc. Protect the writing.

I'm a fan of the genre, but it has to be tuned to a safe level of stress or I can't take it, like it's really happening to me or someone I love. I should have a better barrier between the artificial world of the story & my personal reality. But it seems I have a real problem with this. Not sure why.

I know hardly anyone sees these journal-posts, but as a writer, what else would I do? Anyway, episode 7 is almost done. Hitting 'dark night of the soul' hard. The voice cast has, amazingly, hung with me during the delay. The storyboard artist got a real job, so she's gone. But life goes on. Sigh.

I tinkered with it. Drives me nuts. I much prefer Scrivener. In addition to easily handling a full-sized novel, it also has lots of ways to keep research & notes organized.

The throne of Apollo. My WIP, The Last Gladiator, is a time travel romance. The main antagonist is a rising dictator in modern Italy, who aspires to be a new Caesar for the world, to claim the mantle of the gods and sit upon the throne of Apollo, a god come to earth. Yet a god with a serious flaw.

Agreed. Writing is just capturing your dreams in written form. Can no more quit dreaming than quit living.

Victory is generational. Admitting the 2024 Bears sucked doesn't mean the 1985 Bears didn't win the super bowl. They did win. Each generation is a new team. We will always be at war with grandiose egos & the hatred they create. Some generations will win. Some will lose. We will win again.

It's like working out. You work up to your limit, and then you take a break, and then you go again. Find your rhythm.

The part of your brain the creates and the part of your brain that edits are different. When you edit while writing, you switch your mode of thinking and can gum up the works, so to speak, knocking yourself out of your groove. Correct obvious mistakes, but knock out your pages and edit them after.

Absolutely. It's a YA time travel romance, The Last Gladiator, built on the ever-popular hate-to-love trope, she suspects him of faking his oddness to take advantage of her family, so at first she's all about exposing him. Except the truth turns out to be stranger & more dangerous than she thought.

A word of advice if you plan to proofread your own writing: don't...

Maybe just ask him, why does he think you love writing? We have this debate in our local writing group. This one guy, very successful businessman, just doesn't get writing for the love of writing. The debate gets intense at times. He's passionate we SHOULD want to make money. I push back. Gently.

More and more I'm convinced that the secret to dialogueβ€”really to all playwritingβ€”is to weaponize your exposition. Turn bits of information into blows.

The aud doesn't mind/notice exposition if it's used to attack, defend or deflect.

They watch the battle but learn the world.

Very excited today. I'm writing the grand finale of my time travel romance mini-series, The Last Gladiator. There's always been a risk it would get bogged down with complexity. But today I found a hidden key that will keep the essence simple & turn complexity into beauty. I hope.

Definitely bring folks along on the journey. In fact, I should name everyone I talk to as a co-author, because the very act of talking about it always gives me new ideas that make the story better. Always. But can you imagine the acknowledgements page if I did that? Geez.

I do have a more positive go-to motivator. I just start telling someone else about my story. My brain slips into storytelling mode, I catch the flash of inspiration and ride a new wave of motivation. Works every time. Just tell someone your story, like a story.

The relentless flow of time is a key motivator for me. I'm an older guy. If I don't finish this project before my time is up, I'll never get to see it brought to life. I forget who, but someone once said, a life should be lived so that every note of the song is played. Let your whole song be heard.

Hi! It's a screenplay, 7-part mini-series, young adult time travel romance: Penny Hooper, marching band saxophonist, scheming to escape her crazy family, rescues Latin-speaking stranger from local lake. With villains in pursuit, it all comes down to a final sword fight in Rome: The Last Gladiator.
