An article by @wil.to on problems found in the ancient JS Date API and how they are solved in the modern Temporal API πŸ‘

Focuses on immutability and ergonomics of calculations. Love the kicker.

since LLMs save us time coding we have a lot more time to think

since we're thinking about things longer we realize most of our ideas are bad

and since most of our ideas are bad we don't ship as much code

I think there's an undervaluation of the nature of eng prompts versus someone with no coding exp. I've had a moment of depression around this but have also seen the opportunity for enterprise and innovation at an all time high for my lifetime

I'm not sure what data everyone thinks they possess that the UK government doesn't already have access to. I don't see these digital IDs as much more than a way for you o prove you are who you say you are and to reduce employers hiring illegal workers.

I've put off reading Designing Data-Intensive Applications for the past 2-3 years. Finally made the purchase after being made redundant. Here's to keeping myself employed for the next couple of years with improved software design knowledge!

A lot of SaaS companies are between a 1-shot to 1 week effort but charging old cost models, I'm sure people are still paying too. SWEs are the most acutely aware doom-sayers but the rest of the world is unaware of just how much change has been taking place over the past year.

I recently switched from a 8GB RAM MacBook Air to a 36GB M4 Pro. Things become much smoother (literally ship 2x more PRs) but I wish someday I can instead optimize my tools and go back to my 8GB Air :/

Announcing Lingui 5.0 | Lingui Today we are pleased to announce the release of Lingui 5.0!

v5 of Lingui was just released. We've been working to adopt Lingui at Khan Academy and it's by-far the best i18n library around. The use of macros, SWC integrations, deep React integrations, and idiomatic POT/PO file support makes it a huge win. lingui.dev/blog/2024/11...

Behind the scenes, the company was also quietly dismantling a system to prevent the spread of misinformation. When the company announced on Jan. 7 that it would end its fact-checking partnerships, the company also instructed teams responsible for ranking content in the company’s apps to stop penalizing misinformation, according to sources and an internal document obtained by Platformer.

The result is that the sort of viral hoaxes that ran roughshod over the platform during the 2016 US presidential election β€” β€œPope Francis endorses Trump,” Pizzagate, and all the rest β€” are now just as eligible for free amplification on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads as true stories.

I see three distinct phases. Pre-Fox, when opinion was diverse but actual facts were indisputable.
Fox/Trump, where objective truth was subjected to the false equivalence of β€˜alternative facts’ (ie lies).
And now, where media & tech platform owners collude with him to drown out the truth altogether.

A minimalist illustration showing a packaged charger box labeled "one Union one Charger." The box features an image of a blue charger with the European Union flag symbol and a USB-C cable. The scene is set within a holiday theme, with decorative Christmas trees, ornaments, and gift boxes surrounding the charger box. In the top right corner, there is a small EU flag symbol.

It’s time for THE charger.

Today, the USB-C becomes officially the common standard for charging new mobile electronic devices in the EU.

It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need!

Hello, Jon.

This is Spotify headquarters. Although this presentation is typically automatically generated, we find these circumstances so extraordinary that we felt the need to reach out to you with a personal message. We have found that while you did listen to rap music this year, you listened to country music as well. This is a music listening pattern of such rare precedent that we were compelled to disconnect our servers, lest our algorithm crash them entirely upon attempting to categorize your tastes. You are the most interesting person we have ever encountered, and we wish the incurious blockheads who make up the remainder of our subscriber base shared not only your adventurous spirit, but fearless authenticity. We have your banking information on file. As a token of our appreciation, $5,000,000 USD will be deposited into your account immediately.

Thank you for everything, Jon.
