Catchers Don’t Improve by Chance: Build a System That Wins How we tracked, analyzed, and visualized catcher performance to turn practice into measurable game impact without expensive tech or a full analytics staff.

"In a lot of ways, the model was what professional organizations do with systems like TrackMan and internal R&D Departments."

Like the idea that you are better than your opponent but still have the patience to fight the urge to swing is a huge asset.

17 Walks in one game for Team USA to me just shows that they are willing to wear people down. Obviously Brazil was outmatched but something to continue to watch .

Do you have the search?

@tangotiger.com I can try to filter for Batter Interference but don't find any videos I get no results for that? Same for say Catchers Interference? Same for caught stealing in the Savant Search? Maybe its me?

The way that pitches move plays a part in which knee a catcher should be putting down. It would make sense to give youself some room to work. But the league is just throwing spaghetti around. Maybe its deeper than that. But. I'll probably write something at some point.

The spread is wild.

But then you look at the Dodgers. And they are almost universally left knee down.

Almost universally teams are going knee down across the board.

But when you break it down situationally from 2025 everyone seems to be guessing at what knee to put down and why?

One thing that is talked about alot is counteracting the pitch shape, but here is Arizona. Right knee down.

Berry’s Method: Reducing Mistakes Through Intentional Teaching Spring Training isn’t for survival it’s for construction it’s where habits get built, language gets standardized, and expectations get programmed.

"This is about pride in instruction it’s about caring enough to refine how you teach, not just what you teach. It requires stepping outside of what’s comfortable, outside of what you’ve always done, and being willing to adjust in small but intentional ways."

He is right thought we saying that they currently aren't taking his crouch into consideration. Tons that goes into this obviously.

If you go stance based you have to decide at what point do you set the zone?

The rule here has switched around over the past few years in AAA. It started height based.

Going to assume some teams did a better job than others at explaining this rule.

Both have pros and cons to them

Daily take on the ABS MLB put out their graphic and their using measured height for the zone.

Food start but not perfect as it doesn't account for stance. We are now down a rabbit hole of granular decisions.

Do you use stance data eventually? If so when do you take those measurements?

Everyone is watching for pitch tipping. The Red Sox ‘just happen to be really good at it, and you know it.’ - The Boston Globe Virtually all teams seek tells from opposing pitchers and try to eliminate them from their own, and it's legal.

MLB is requiring base coaches to stand in their designated boxes in an effort to rein in scouting of pitch-tipping. From last September, a look at how the art of identifying pitch-tipping has evolved in the age of technology: www.bostonglobe.com/2025/09/30/s...

Secondarily the Coaching Box rules enforcement should have happened earlier. It's mostly about coaches picking pitchers grips in the glove. It's small but it just helps to clean up what's left of those situations.

MLB clearly has a fear that teams will be way too conservative with their challenges. Almost guaranteed teams will save challenge for late and tight.

Them giving teams more challenges in extras is them trying to incentivize them using them earlier.

Establishing Priority and Progression in Practice Every staff in the game is chasing the same thing: better players in the smallest window of time possible.

Clean practice is fine but transfer to competition is better.

Today on the Substack looking at how finding and creating order throughout practice helps put the focus on what matters.

Can't tell if you want me to write this up or not 😂

Two late night thoughts as I sit down to write a little bit.

1. Majority of Offensive Challenges will skew heavily toward hitters with lots of service time or close to free agency.

2. Teams will be ultra conservative, especially if they burn one early in the game.
