Hawaii, The High Llamas (1996)
If I could recommend just one album to all of #musicsky, it'd be this: the double album Hawaii from the High Llamas.
Immaculately crafted songs, set to at times breathtaking arrangements, all suffused with O'Hagan's customary wit—and banjos.

After Lollo Rosso, had to go back to Cold and Bouncy.
Sean O’Hagan’s usual pastiche of Brian Wilson & Burt Bacharach is brightened by Andy Ramsay’s soft‑focus synth pulses & skittering bleeps but it still sounds like The High Llamas. More cohesive & engaging than the remixes.

The High Llamas burbling pop is tailor-made to background a lazy, sunny, bank holiday weekend.
Buzzle Bee is even more lightweight than usual. It starts off dreamy and tips into positively sophoric on some tracks. Fine for BGM, but wouldn’t recommend for active listening.

It takes real skill to write an album that is so clearly an homage to the 60s yet avoid parody or pastiche. Pugwash’s The Olympus Sound sounds like a mashup of the Beatles and Beach Boys but this is not just imitation. It evokes the Golden Age but still manages to feel timeless.

Remix EPs are tricky. Too similar & it’s pointless. Too different & it’s ruined.
Lollo Rosso is bits of Cold & Bouncy remixed by the likes of Mouse on Mars & it walks the fine line. I still prefer the original but this is different enough to be interesting & I don’t hate it.

My favourite Irish album of 1998.
Alongside Cathal Coughlan, Sean O’Hagan was one half of Microdisney. Sean then collaborated with Stereoloab before focusing on The High Llamas.
Cold & Bouncy saw him move further into electronica. Think The Beach Boys meet John Barry soundtracks meet Kraftwerk.
