Tracking the Port Road. I went in search of the ruins of a 19th century railway, hiked to the site of one of the most remote railway stations in the country, and wondered at the transient nature and qualities of human creation.

One of my more unrealistic expectations (apart from, apparently a salaried job) is access to a full size swimming pool, 24 hours a day, so after writing at night I can go and wallow like a manatee in the deep blue waters.

Ah, to be up until 5.30am writing, then waking up nearly 12 hours later. I suppose a consolation is that the grey, damp, dark world outside looks much the same. 🫠

My case study illustrates the life of perhaps the most socially prominent confirmed gay man from the province pre-1960s, Captain Peter Montgomery. For the first time, his biography is properly established and misinformation cleared away. The role of an unstable author in his downfall is shown.

We use a wide range of source material, much of it previously unknown to scholarship, including police files, as well as letters, memoirs, diaries and newspaper reporting. In the process we show how despite - or because of - public ignorance, queer friendships and romances could flourish.

We show how queer men’s lives were influenced by international knowledge exchanges. Men travelled across national borders, obtained clandestine gay novels and read sexological literature.

I think politicians do perform, only the image they project is of shifty estate agents, or weird brittle apparitions in suits with ties and top buttons done up and other signs of untrustworthiness.

Not only this but there is the lamentable spread of mullets and even worse, moustaches amongst otherwise attractive men in their twenties. Why??
