Real, both are possible and good for sure, and I'm always excited to see something I've never seen before! I just also have a tendency to be like "gaah nothing I make has any value, it's just fantasy with stuff stolen from anime!" but like, I like that stuff too, and should have fun in the process!

Junko just fished a massive fish and punched a shark. I wish fishing was that easy. Then again, she's absolutely ripped with muscle and dappled with faded scars; it must have taken her a long time to get that good.

I just played the 'Sushi Ben' demo by @dmawdev.bsky.social. It's so is beautiful and charming! I wish more games looked like this. And it's also hilarious and well presented! Makes me wish I had a VR system. But I REALLY appreciate that it has a non-VR mode!

And when you've got this big telegraphed attack, apart from it fitting the aesthetic of a super powerful attack, you can sorta just design whatever you want from here. Damage numbers that would otherwise be unfair, mechanics that rely on what actions players take or where, bargains and trades, etc.

When I first started playing, I think I remember someone getting hit with like, dragon fire or something and asking "well, can I duck under the table?" which is a Very Cool visual, but a little too late when you're making dex saves. But I like leaning into that right?? Sword clashes and bullet time!

The last few D&D games I ever ran I just straight-up stole FFXIV markers and replaced Lair Actions and things with them, and that was lots of fun. I still sometimes chuck them in other games because it's a lot more fun seeing people Lock In to figure out instead of just taking a random hit.

My current project, Raging Seas, does this! Just straight-up MMO markers, big and glowing and flavoured to whatever enemy is using them, set to go off at the end of the Round. Because now people have a bunch of options and decisions to make about how to deal with this, or to CHOOSE to tank it even!

like, one guy's Struggle is their pride, and defeat condition is being outdone by their rival. their personal defeat condition has nothing to do with whether or not they win a Fight.

someone else's Struggle is peace, and their personal defeat condition is Fighting For Reals or something, etc.

like, i dunno, it's maybe a little silly to go "i like the fist punch energy scream dragon anime for the characters" but like yeah i dunno i just do, and i think it would be more fun to have your ki building from doing dumb tropey bullshit to kinda direct the battle anime episode of your dreams-

sometimes i feel like making a token based dragon ball game using caltrop core. fuck making some bespoke in-depth combat system, the bulk of the mechanics are all around building tension and telling a shonen battle anime and building tokens during that, which are then spent during actual fights-
