No clue on this one, but I remember noticing when I went a while ago that live theater in the West End was a lot cheaper than Broadway and yet movies were 2 to 3 times as expensive as us. Maybe cultural priorities?

Saw a non-public dataset yesterday that indicated Rhode Island has on average more than double the civic engagement per capita relative to other parts of the country. Those two stats explain a lot about our politics

All I see is two friends and a block of granite, a lot of friend demand in that picture. We’re clearly running a friend deficit.

STATE HOUSE β€” In response to a string of tariffs levied by President Trump, Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston) is calling on Gov. Dan McKee to establish free trade zones in Rhode Island under powers granted to the governor by King Charles II in Rhode Island’s Royal Charter.

According to the charter, which was granted by the king on July 18, 1663, the governor and all successors are empowered to β€œhold commerce and trade, with such inhabitants of other colonies peaceably.”

In a letter to the governor, Representative McNamara suggested that the Commerce Corporation could explore the possibilities of establishing trade agreements with international car manufacturers and name the Quonset Industrial Park as a free trade zone.

He also suggested that Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, which is currently building a warehouse, would be ideal for duty-free importing, and that the Port of Providence has been underutilized as a working port and would be booming if it were named the first Free Trade Port on the East Coast.

β€œOur state has a long history of resisting unfair authoritative trade mandates and taxes,” wrote Representative McNamara. β€œOne only has to reflect back on our 252-year history to be reminded of the action that our early colonists took in 1772 when faced with an unlawful British vessel. The burning of the Gaspee was not only the first meaningful event of the American Revolution, but it also solidified our belief in free trade and the rights that were given to us by King Charles II in 1663.”

Rhode Island proposing a tariff-free trade zone using its Royal Charter from 1663 is some remarkably creative policy thinking.

yeah, who knows? Maybe if he sticks with it and helps a bunch of conservative people moderate or be receptive to democratic positions, or at least break through all the lies, then that would be good. Timing didn’t make it look that way.

Yeah, that was an interesting point about it. Color me a little dubious given how much he has been talked about for a presidential campaign, but also because I think you would start with a lot less controversial figures if you wanted to ease a bipartisan audience into listening to the other side.

To be clear, you can be right left or center with this strategy, but they want to know it is the real new. If you change which camp you tend to lean into too many times then no one is gonna take you seriously.

People don’t want moderates, they want people to fight for what they believe in with conviction. Really undercutting his β€œfighter for CA normie Dem values” brand, and outing himself as the weathervane sociopath we all always thought he seemed like.

I think some in the Senate have convinced themselves that the backlash to folding will be limited to β€œthe left” and therefore ignorable.

Those people are deeply and profoundly misreading the moment and the stakes.

Virtually every swing district House Dem walked the plank to vote NO for a reason.

It’s abundantly clear in the last few weeks that boomers by and large do not understand the gravity of the moment we’re in, I think there is a large correlation between β€œwe’ve been here before and come back from the brink” thinking, and having low internet literacy, or being completely offline
