There’s something of a subgenre of writers in this category whose sad early passing left us remembering them and wondering what they had in store for the characters as we see their names on fiction bookshelves.

Nothing wrong with good drink and food among the clues, from Nero Wolfe to Gabriel Allon. Jason Matthew ended chapters with recipes.

I have enjoyed them. If you like twisty, John Burdett’s Bangkock detective series are are that with humor. James Church’s Inspector O, set in North Korea, like Cruz Smith’s Arkady Renko, and Kerr’s Bernie Gunther, have to overcome predetermined outcomes - and survive.
