The sea outside the hotel and the sea inside the work feel bound to one another. Fruit, empire, memory. The water keeps moving. So does the exchange.

The images are generated from those descriptions and shaped slowly, frame by frame. I return often to this question in my work: what happens when language settles into image, and when image begins to drift from record.
The piece begins with the travel writings of Evliya Ăelebi, who described seventy-seven thousand acres of citrus on the island and the sweetness measured carefully before it left for the palace.
At the Riviera Marriott Hotel La Porte de Monaco, curated by Artpoint, my video work Lemon, SeyahatnĂąme. Chios, Ottoman Empire, 1670s. is on view through the end of February.
The sea off Cap dâAil stays in motion. Ships pass. Trade continues. Yachts rest in the harbor below the lobby screens, their hulls catching the same light that moves east toward Chios.
